I bought my car back in Sept 10, and soon realised that the abs light did not come on on turning the ignition key. So i wasn't sure my ABs was working and went out and tried stopping quickly and sure enough tyre smoke city ensued.

After a day or so i found a minature bulb kicking around in the ashtray. After speaking to a mate who has had a couple of gti6's i was told that people remove the bulb when there is an ABS fault in order to pass the MOT, as the only test they do is to check if the light is on. The car had passed an MOT just 1 week before i bought it .
Could someone confirm this is the only test?

I wasn't overly bothered about this until having ' a moment' as i approached a rounbout the other day.

main question :- Does anyone know how to get into the bulbs behind the dials so i can put a new bulb in?

Next question is does it have to go pug to tell me which sensor is dead?

i have done some searching to no avail.

It will still fail, as in the MOT test the bulb has to light up and then go off.

use this for accessing the bulb:

speedo removal

In future have a look in the FAQ before looking to be wet-nursed

Regarding your ABS problem try using the search button as there are numerous posts about ABS faults and what to check for...

James GTI6 - thank you clear concise advsie

Sharveyy44 - I spend at least 2 hours a day on this forum and am very careful not to ask things that have been answered before.I am therefore very aware of the SEARCH Button.

I am not looking to be 'Wet Nursed' as you say. I genuinely couldn't find what i needed when i searched for 'change instrument panel bulb' and many other interpretations.

The whole idea of the forum it to get assistance with our beloved cars. I appreciate you pointing me in the right direction, many thanks.

You should remember however that we are all allowed to post sometimes.

First check would be to make sure all of the toothed rings are present. My brothers shit a ring in December and I had to change the shaft at the front.

Next test would be to check the resistance of each sensor by unplugging it and putting a multimeter across it's plug. The rear two plugs are in front of the spare wheel, the two front ones are in the engine bay, nestled on the inside of the suspension turrets. You'll spot one reading stand out if it's a duffer.

It will be one of the sensors on one of the hubs I would assume it will be a case of putting a multimeter across each one to see if any are faulty ????

You can unplug each sensor and measure the resistance across the 2 terminals - according to autodata it should be between 1500 - 3000 ohms.

You can also do this by checking the relevant pins on the ABS ECU multiplug (located on the side of the ABS pump)

Front Left Sensor - Pins 6&7
Front Right Sensor - Pins 3&5
Rear Left Sensor - Pins 8&9
Rear Right Sensor - Pins 1&2

The pin layout should be as below:

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
- - - - - - -
- - - - - -- -- -- --

Hope that makes sense, the top row of pins are numbered 15 - 1 from left to right, i.e top right is pin 1

Graeme Thumbs up

Haven't been under the car this weekend due to being at Peter Kay concert last night and suffering today from excess beer intake.

I'll try these ideas next weekend and let you know how it get on.

Thanks for the advice guys.
