hard to say without hearing it, take a video of it and post it up. ideally one when cold and one when hot.
normally a "tapper" will always tap

hi, i had a similar problem not to long ago, my freind is a mechanic and all he did was pop the head of to reveal something call taper heads, he said over a long time they need lubricating and slight adjustment, in asda or you local autoparts store they will have stuff u put straight into your oil which lubricates these parts and also other parts or have a mechanic adjust the tapper heads, then you should have a quiter engine,

does your enginge sound like a 1992 ford fiesta?

This is a tapper video I found on ebay is it as bad as that?

I thought mine might be a tapper this morning but I put a video up and the general opinion seems to be that it isnt from the video.

Heres my thread about it

Had this happen to my 6 not long after I got it, was quiet when cold but small tapping sound when warm/hot, turned out to be a loose spark plug.

That sounds like it could be the beginnings of a bottom end failure to me.

A bent valve / worn guide tap would be present from cold. It could be a lifter I suppose, but it's rare for them to cause problems.

Having said that, these engines are louder generally from cold as most engines are so are you sure it's not masking the tap when cold?
