Hiya guys,

I'm wanting to replace an engine in my nephew's car. I've drained the oil and water and disposed of them at the local recycling centre.
When draining the coolant, there was lots of oil in there (head gasket has gone) and i was just wondering (after the engine has been removed) what's the best way to ensure all remaining oil is removed from the coolant system? I'm guessing a flush, but how do you do it with the engine removed? Unsure

Cheers Kev

Yes Just need to force it out the pipes, generally only residual amounts left in pipework.

Pretty much, you'll more than likely never get rid of 100% of it, after doing the H/G on my 6 a couple of years ago i kept getting tiny floating bits of oil in the top of the expansion bottle for a few weeks, just the last few bits making their way out. soon clears up if you fish them out though Wink

Cheers guys,

Does it matter which pipes I use or can i put 'clean' water down any andf just see where it comes out?

Should i use a 'flush' mixture, correct anti freeze/water mix or clean water?

Thanks again

Heater matrix and rad may never be the same again, just depends if you can get the crap out. Might be worth looking online to see if any degreaser is better than another.

May be a case of refill system and then drain say after a couple of hundred miles a few times to try and get the system cleaned out Wink Seems the best way to get an engine clean of really old oil Wink

Fill the cooling system with water only and then put half a box of Persil washing powder in the cooling system as well. Drive the car for about 50 miles and then drain, you will find it really clears out the old oil inside the water ways....Yes

Stan.

I really wouldn't do this. Washing powder and liquid etc is quite alkali which could increase corrosion on the matrix.

I would just flush with warm water, then fill with water only and add rad flush. Repeating until it comes out clean.

That's basically the same method, but will just take longer. I haven't found any matrix issues by using the Persil method for some years now, rad flush is probably the designated way to do it if you have the time to wait. Smile
