I followed the FAQ but this only allows the Mani to be pulled about 2'' off the head, what else needs to be removed to get it right off? Is it difficult? Could do with a bit more space for cleaning the faces off prior to fitting new gasket

You must have missed a bolt. If I remember right (and I haven't removed one in over 4 years) there is a hidden bolt underneath that you have to get off. Have you removed all the fuel lines etc?

hi, dont worry this a really easy job. by the sounds of it you have not taken off the loom that goes to all the sensors on the t/b and injectors.

if you take them off and push them down through the inlet it should come off. also make sure the brackets underneath the inlet are off.

hope this helps.

many thanks,richard.

I disconnected 2 plugs off the tb but could see a load of cables still connected underneath, not a plug tho so couldn't unplug. Is there a plug somewhere further down the line?

Will there b any issues in disconnecting injectors and fuel lines etc?

Yes, the fuel will be under pressure so don't spray yourself in the eye with it. And there is a 13mm? bolt on a bracket underneath, hard to get ar with the small gap between the plenum and the radiator but it wont come off till you remove that first.

Yeah I've undone all those hidden bolts and dipstick etc. the inlet is off, but only a few inches, need to get it right off. It will be the loom underneath. Didnt appear to be a plug though, will have another look nxt week

back of the throttle position sensor there is a clip, have to get it from underneath. think that is what the sensor is. so much easier if you remove the airbox and inlet pipe if you have not already done so

Bingo.

You can't really see it from above, but it's 99% guaranteed it's that one.

Bump for an old thread!

Why would be the correct torque settings for the manifold bolts?

And what could you use to clean the faces of the inlet and the engine, alcohol? Meths?

Regards, Dave

Cool, cheers

Edit: won't you risk scraping shut into the cylinders?

When I do things like this, I always get some kitchen towels and screw four of them up into balls and place one in each port. Then you can start scraping. That way when you've finished and all the shards of old gasket are sitting on top of them, you can pull each one out with a set of pliers and the rubbish doesn't fall into the engine. Smile

Okay, I have just been out and removed the inlet manifold and replaced the paper gasket with a Phillipm PTFE type. Also replaced the resonator with an Aluminium bung to see how that goes.

I was feeling all really wicked with myself and had a high sense of achievement etc etc, however bolts J and K (below) simply will not match back up to the holes.

I'm sure its due to the fact that the new gasket is much thicker than the original one, and has spaced the whole manifold up slightly, but I would like someone to confirm this please?

Do these bolts NEED to go back in, will the manifold have enough support without them?
Why can't I get them back in if they are supposed to??

Regards, Dave

Fit these bolts first Dave, just a few turns by hand and then get all the other manifold bolts in by a few turns as well, and then you will find they will all fit. Thumbs up

Okay, I've just been and done this, didnt take that long in the end lol

HOWEVER!

When i restarted the engine this time the car immediately started over-revving!

We double checked the throttle cable and tried again, this time the car started and started revving again, i pressed the accelerator just to see what that did and the engine dies down.

But the car wont run smoothly now, it makes a horrible cracking/poppoing noise every so often and my dad reckons he saw a spark coming from the injector/manifold bolt when i made a popping noise?

Any suggestions?

Regards, Dave

Sounds like an air leak from somewhere, are you 100% you have tightened all the bolts correctly that bolt it to the head. And also is the seal etc ok on the resonator bung?
