Left my car garaged for 3 days without using it last week. When I came to start it the battery was flat (some electrical lights on the dash etc came on but not enough power to start up, after a while the dash lights started flickering as well).

I hadn't left any lights or anything on and the front part of the head unit had been detached so unlikely to have been caused by something left on.

So jump started went for a drive and was fine for a couple of days.

Had the car in the garage again over the weekend, hadn't used it for 36hours- came to start it again today, same problem. So jump started and went for a drive again.

When I got back - followed the battery faq to check with a multi meter.

Checking the charge in the battery read 12.40 volts which means it charged back up fine once I had been out in it.

So then checked if anything was draining it while the car was off- by disconnecting the negative terminal and putting the meter between that and the negative post in amps mode. Read 0.00 no matter what setting I put it on. I would have thought there would have been a small reading for the clock / odometer / ecu etc but nothing at all?

Any ideas? Is my battery just knackered? How do I tell if it is? Would it be charging up to the correct voltage if it was?

afaik its Ohms you need to set the meter to to find the drain, not amps.

did you check the alternators output?

Ahh, I might go and check that now. Was just following the faq:

FAQ wrote:

3. Check for parasitic drain.
Remove the negative terminal from the battery.
Set your multimeter to 10 Amps.
Plug the black probe into COM and red into Amps.
Place the black probe onto the terminal on the lead to the car, and the red onto the negative post on the battery.
The MM should read a mili-amp figure.
Around 20-25ma or less should be fine - this will be clock, hifi battery, ecu etc. (Mine was around 16ma).
25ma and greater and you may have a drain somewhere.

Haven't checked alternator output yet may do it in the morning but I presume it's fine as it charged the battery up to the correct voltage again after it was dead.

I think amps is the correct setting after some checking online.

But I tried every setting on the meter anyway and nothing gave any reading.

Only thing that worked was to put it back into volts mode and connect the positive terminal and the disconnected negative lead- which read 0.33 volts.
