many people will remember this

so following on from this, the 6 is now road legal Big grin

last week was when the majority of the work was done. good job really, considering the weather we're having this week Sad

i bought the car, with no m.o.t. a snapped front spring, excessive noise of the exhaust and front o/s sidelight not working

first job was to remove the monstrosity of an exhaust system. cat welded to straight through centre pipe and then backbox welded onto that

replacement std exhaust, and o/e cat in excellent condition £95

next (and favourite) job, was to lower the ride height of the rear beam. but at the same time, fit new bearings and seals, and also use the vts 21mm torsion bars i had in stock

new mounts were also fitted, at a cost of £250 for the 4

didn't really know what height to set the beam, so i took into consideration of fitting thicker torsion bars and set it at 312mm between shocker mounts. i also left the a.r.b out, as chances are, i would probably have to adjust again

once the beam was back on, my work could commence on the front end of the car

i started off by draining the gearbox oil and the coolant, and then removed the std struts. i already had some almost new bilsteins, which already had eibach springs fitted. so it was a simple swap Wink

re-filled the gearbox with oil, and then started on fitting new cambelt, tensioners and waterpump

although the 6 has a fpsh, the previous owner had no idea when the cambelt was changed. so just to be on the safe side, i thought i'd get it done

once the plastic belt covers were removed, it was plain to see that cambelt and waterpump had only done a few hundred miles. typical! ah well !

once new cambelt etc was fitted, i fitted new thermostat and filled the cooling system, and bled. then replaced the o/e spark plugs with some NGK ones Wink

also fitted a k&n replacement filter, which i got cheap Wink

car fired up lovely Big grin

drove car to the end of my drive to check ride height.

as expected, it did sit a little high for my liking, so adjusted the torsion bars to bring the ride height down about 10mm. once that was done, i re-fitted the a.r.b, and hand brake cables. also fitted new shocks and tightened to correct torque

all i had to do then was bleed the brake system with fresh fluid, and job done

i also remembered i'd bought some later 306 headlights (crystals), so i fitted them also

once all the work was done, i gave the 6 it's first wash in my ownership, and to be fair, it scrubs up quite well (albeit a few little dents)

i've also just had 2 steel wheels re-furbed, and had some snow tyres fitted. will post pics up later Razz

(BIG THANKS TO EVERYONE THAT HAS SUPPLIED ME WITH THE PARTS TO GET MY GTI6 DONE Smile )

sorry for the delay in updating this thread Blush

done quite a bit to the car, and most of you know, there's always something else to do LOL

first job i wanted to do, was get a nice fresh set of re-furbed cyclones

already had 2 decent pe2s, so decided to have 2 new ones (always been a toyo man)

while the wheels were away, i'd ordered rich_w roller bearing bushes to replace these

voila Cool

powder coated wishbones with new ball joints, and roller bearings fitted

and fitted

while i was under the car, i also fitted new diff seals and a bbm bottom mount Big grin

the difference in driving with roller bearings and bottom mount is like day and night!

also decided to check top mount

oops Thumbs down

luckily chassis mount is in good order Smug

genuine part new mount, and old fubar'd mount

next job on the list is to replace the slightly weepy steering ram. thanks to shakey, i have one ready to bolt on

future jobs, are to, fit freshly painted front calipers, new discs and pads, freshly painted rear yokes and disc protectors, and also powdercoated cam covers and inlet manifold

so watch this space Smug

also did a bit to the interior

steering wheel was in a poor condition, so i decided to change

unfortuneatly, i was a little too keen pulling the wheel off, and pulled the wiring off the contacts for the airbag. but luckily my trusty soldering iron fixed my f**k up

better condition steering wheel fitted Big grin

i also wanted to repair the o/e wiring for the stereo. simple enough job, once i'd bought the proper connectors. even simpler job fitting the new head unit Smug

back to the exterior. i wasn't happy how the passenger door sat in it's frame. so i removed the door

adjusted hinges

and voila Big grin

sits in the frame a lot better

also the outer window weatherstrips had started to bubble (as can be seen in top of pic)

so replaced with new (the 2 in bottom of pic)
