Right, I've only had my '6' since March so this is the first time I've driven it in the snow and ice...

So I guess this is also my first experience with ABS, as my dTurbo certainly didn't have it.

I was driving to the end of my close where it turns into a perfect ice rink and braked as you would expect to only to SHIT myself thinking my brakes had broken or frozen or something.

I could hear a motor noise of some sort and the pedal felt like a stone or rotating gear was underneath it preventing me from pushing it down (and could feel a resistance/grinding/vibrating in my foot)

Now, braking was fine on normal wet roads and the sensation I just described only returned on the deadly stuff, so I'm assuming (hoping) this is my ABS working, but it took me by surprise! Blink

Is this definately the sensation/feedback I should be getting with ABS, like I say, I've never had any experience with it before and it just surprised me a little.

Cheers, Dave

That sounds perfectly normal. When the ABS is working you feel the pedal kick back.

It can't perform miracles though, if you brake hard on ice you still won't stop very quickly.

hahaha, sounds like you had the EXACT same experience as me.

I went from my first car (Dturbo) to a GTi-6 and did the same and i thought my car was nackard.

Perfectly normal mate as mentioned above!

ABS is a PITA in the snow as Adam said. Nowt wrong with a bit of pedal control, most drivers these days shit a brick in the snow cos they don't know how to drive in it.

The number of cars stuck in the village here and my car just pootles along perfectly happy.

i took the barely-road-legal one out today and it performed effortlessly except for the washer fluid being froze. the gti6 headlight bulb needs replacing still (what i should have done rather than buying an m3..), the locks have seized, the back near side tyre is flat, the battery is dead aswell Angry

Your neighbours must love you!
I'll be nice and let you store a TVR in the bottom workshop, leave the keys.

Yeah during the last cold snap one night everything compacted and re-froze, was pretty hairy and the ABS was getting in the way. I just ended up pulling one of the connectors temporarily (IIRC driver's side is easy to reach) Wizard

If it's Corby, then may I suggest you tread extra carefully as it seems evident from my last 4 winters of commuting through it that Corby council don't own a single gritter. Dry
