The typical conditions which sporting rubber is designed to operate in are from 6c upward. Wide treads with summer compounds are much harder work in winter conditions and winter tyres have tread patterns designed not to fill with snow and rubber designed to remain grippy at low temps. Last year my Leon on GSD3's was capable of getting me about but only just. In freezing conditions the compound was bakelite hard and the tread picked up a full coat of ice.
If you can, get some on steelies and drive nearly as easily as in normal conditions.
Don't leave it until the first snow-supplies simply weren't there.

Snow socks are another alternative to just get you through the worst of the snow.

not as if anybody else makes and effort to keep the roads in decent condition though is it?? Im still bitter about popping a week old tyre on a pothole last year, the council refused to pay out for it the pooheads!

I use Dunlop Winter Sport 3D, Great tyre and even in non snow/Ice conditions the wet grip is pretty impressive, Allot better than any summer tyre, almost to the extent not much in it during wet braking distance.

Its a really, really good handbrake as I found out at Curborough on saturday. Instant lock-up.

Not quite as useful as fiddle bars though.Ninja

I think I'll try and find some steelies, the north gets snowy and our Council seemed very overwhelmed last year. I might get a set of Alpin's on the steels. My mates Dturbo was impressive in the snow, loads of grip!

185/60 Continental winter tyres available from Kwik Fit at £260 a set inc. fitting (online booking). Virtually the same rolling radius as the 195/55, suitable for a 6" rim and T rated - I can't see myself doing more than 118 in the snow...

Finally had snow today.
Initial impression are:

Sideways grip - 10-15% more than summer
Acceleration grip - 30-40% more
Braking grip - 50% more. They are really good for braking.

Basically means that they are great for trundling about up to 30mph and drive pretty much normally. As soon as the turbo torque kicks in its 4 wheel snaking down the road in any gear. But you can stop a lot faster.

I am now Colin Mcrae Ninja

£400 for winter tyres just to get stuck in traffic behind people with no winter tyres seems a waste of money imo Hmm

It's never actual problems with people without winter tyres. It's always numpties who should have their licences taken from them. The type of person who drives at 40mph everywhere. Be it a 30mph limit or a 60mph limit. Then when it gets to snow they drive at 20mph so have no momentum when they reach any ice.
