What are the symptoms for this? I suspect mine maybe suffering. Is it possible to run the engine without the cam covers on to inspect or will oil p*ss all over the place?

If oil does not p*ss all over the place, the you definately have a problem.

Even with just the oil filler cap removed and engine at tick over, you should get oil all over the place.

starvation isnt too common on the 6 with good pump and sump design. But if you are worried check you oil level and check for leaks first off.. common place is behind the flywheel and rear cam cover..

had a similar problem with my 6... common for the one way valve in the head to get clogged up causing severe oil starvation to top end... i ran mine briefly with the cam covers removed and had no oil hardly coming out the spray bars at all.

try that 1st, check the spray bars if not your looking at head off unfortunatley Sad
