hey fellas, trying to get my head around ECU requirements so i know which i can go for.

Been looking at Megasquirts but they're tailored to specific setups.

For instance, with the GTi6 running individual coilpacks, would I have to convert to a dizzy for ignition? Does the RS engine use wasted or non wasted ignition?

Basically i'll be fitting itb's and know I need fuelling and ignition control, but what else?

Before anyone says OMEX/Emerald/DTA etc, they're out of price range at the minute and i've heard the MS½ with the EXTRA firmware will be sufficient.

I haven't yet, but looking at Gixxr 1000 or R1 bodies. Need to find a set with all sensors etc and the itb's need to be splittable to space them.

Oh and i need to wait for payday LOL

exactly what iv'e been looking at, the R1's theres a thread on here somewhere about an rs with bike bodies and STANDARD but remapped ecu, 197bhp too.

the RS engine's Magnetti Marelli 1AP ecu runs fully sequential spark and injection, hence the large injectors and a cam position sensor.

you wont need a distributor, it'd be sacrilege to fit one regardless LOL

with most megasquirt packages you'll need to convert to wasted spark, all this means is cutting a few lugs off and bolting in an XSI coilpack unit, or fitting plug leads (GM 16/18XE typically) and an 8V TU/XU wasted spark coilpack.

unless its a more advanced unit and can make use of the cam phase sensor.

what you also have to consider is the small minority of people willing to map them, compared to something like DTA etc.

afaik your original MM 1AP ecu can be mapped and altered to run TPS+RPM as load sensing alone rather than MAP + RPM + TPS, i.e for throttle bodies.


personally and from speaking to a few engine builders and motorsport engineers I wouldn't just plump straight for Jenveys, though on the same vein I wouldn't use a bodged bike body setup, it has to be well thought out and executed, like Colin satchell's work.


however if you cut the plenum off a gti6 inlet, get a suitable flange welded on and firmly bolt on the bodies, then I see no issues at all.

Standard ECU is all well and good but for one reason or another i'm looking at standalone management. I'm well versed with Yanni's thread Wink

Chris for my requirements there's nothing Jenveys can do that warrants the price tag over setting up my own bike bodies. I'll be running a VERY similar setup to Yanni so 200bhp is a real possibility. Coupled with the fact the main reason i'm doing it is for noise, I really can't justify Jenveys

Mei yeah read about the 1AP on various VAG/Opel forums, seems pretty versatile. however Sounds of Silence are happy to play an active part in setting these up so it all depends on what Davie is comfortable with. Wayne was an option until it became apparent i'd have to drive 200+ miles with everything fitted and not even a base map to get down with.

TBH I'd just save the pennies and get DTA S40, they can be picked up as a plug and play directly into a gti6 loom for little more than £500 IIRC.

look on ebay for MEF motorsport.

another option would be the PNP megasquirt that the guy under the user name Luthor1 has been working on.

i roughly priced the r1 bodies(and conversion), ecu remap and came back with £600 approx

For a setup like Yanni's you'd be looking at

Bike bodies approx £100
Inlet manifold £50
custom plenum for MAP and ICV and other fabrication £varies
Trumpets from Colin Satchell etc £100+
Air filter £anyting from £30 for cones to £100+ for dome filter and back plate
Remap of 1AP ECU £450 or so with Chipwizards

Bear in mind I'll be fitting reground inlet and exhaust cams, new belt kit and head gasket at the same time...

Ouch, hadn't added that up before Doh

Add in the cost of standalone too...

Just read the thread, up and running but will be more than the £500 he charges for the Saxo PnP unit. For that kind of money i'd be tempted to go for the DTA anyway as it's more widely supported...

why dont you just save all the money from the inlet piper stuff and the bodies then get a low intrest loan from the bank and get down havant ! job doneSmile

well work out what you are going to lay out, think you could fit a super charger your self save more money , cos i bet all your bits will come to £1500+ your half way there and only need another £2000 for low boost

nothing wrong witth the megasquirt and bike bodies job, but if your not mapping it yourself then you might find its so much faster to setup and map a dta that it works out similar money in the end.

yeah, that was my thoughts given than a megasquirt can be as little as £250 odd, granted these are more tailored.

dunno if you can see this without being a member, but Martin Fox is doing S40's for 106 rallyes with an adapter loom to make them PnP.

It replaces the same 1AP ecu as the gti6 so its pinout would be very close if not identical, though it only runs a wasted spark coilpack originally, so would still require a coilpack swap and minor wiring alteration.
