hi , i bought some polished cam covers but they havnt got the origanal gasket on them. so i took mine off and cleaned both of the surfaces on the head. i applyed some gasket sealent to the new covers and fitted them on but oil started to leak out of them, whats the best way of sealing these?
cheers

Black RTV sealant... but line it on the head side only.... Let it set for 30minutes then apply rocker coversYes

Any one used the 'BLUE' stuff that doesn't fully set ?

Iv had the same sort of problems and the blue stuffs instructions are a little sketchy tbh, it says apply on both head and covers.

They require alot of sealant to get them sealed when the orig seals are missingYes

If you look on the cam covers the cast around the hole where your bolts go through the cover are quite abit higher than the outer edge of the cam cover where the seals are, it's like this to stop you overtightening the bolts and squeezing the orig seals outWink

If you fit the cam covers and bolt them down without any sealant on it will give you a good idea of the size of the bead of sealant you need to use.

It's not ideal though, as you need to use such a big bead of sealer you risk any excess sealer going inside the engine, this can then cause massive probs if it blocks up your oil pick up in the sumpThumbs down

Thats very helpful Coskev, thanks.

I applied a thin bead of sealant before, was worried putting too much on for the above reasons.

So is it best to put a thin bead both on engine and covers around the outer edges of them both, then smoothe out the sealant that would come out the edges ?

When you say test it, would i see a gap around the edge between the head and covers then guess how much is needed?

I wish Pug sold them alone.

If the seals are missing totally yeahYes

It is a big gap to fill with sealer, and far from ideal.I made the mistake of getting some cam covers chromed, never again will I fit any without orig seals in place!!!Thumbs down

I just put a thick bead of sealer onto the cam carriers, then banged the cam covers on and left it along time to go off before running eng.

I guess its the start of the 306 parts being NFP like the 205, also they probably ran out due to selling the covers with the gasket to make more money instead of selling them seperately.

Anyone know of a gasket maker that can get loads made at all, i quickly tried google with no luck ?

Sounds like hylomar which will be useless for that application as it has a very low curing depth I believe loctite rtv is the future when it comes to rockers and sumps but alow it time to cure and apply to a squeaky clean surface and that should keep the oil on the right side of therocker covers Thumbs up

Ok noted, i just got some loctite now anyways, the grey stuff. Read instruction and it doesn't mention oat about the metal tool inside, at a guess its for taking the old stuff off, its a T shaped metal tool with a hollow space inside the whole shape.

Oh right, simple as that, nice little bit extra that means you use every last bit. When compainies help you make the most of their product it makes me want to buy more of their products. I didnt see any other type that had the tool included in the motor factors.
