There's no bearing as the rods are sweated onto the gudgeon pins, and the pins float in the pistons.

I can supply uprated big-ends and mains, PM me your requirements.

thankyou for explaining that, well im not sure what size i need yet as ive got some problems with the crank being scored and i think the bit which drives the oil pump on the crank might be broke as the chain spins when the crank is still?, is it a solid drive from the crank? should there be any slack in the chain?

iirc the chain pulley has a woodruff key in it to stop it spinning on the crank

early type its all done by friction of the crank pulley bolt being done up, nowt to worry about.

there is a certain amount of play in the chain, make sure the 1.1mm spacer is in situ under the oil pump if you have it apart.

whilst youre looking at the pump just check the sprockets for wear.

Even with the spacer in place there is often monumental chain slap. I think this might be what caused Rich W's car to eat two chains so far. I was thinking of trying to fabricate a tensioner of some sort but I'm worried about it failing and taking out the chain anyway. I'll probably make up some shims for the pump to sit on out of some very thin copper shimming sheet I have at work.

have a look on servicebox at what the other engines use, some of the diesels may have thicker or thinner shims, you may be able to use two from another engine possibly.

Thanks. I was thinking that, but it may be too much, if I get a tight spot it will snap the chain just as fast as if it were too loose. I'll just have to experiment with a few options and see what gives the best fit. Give me a dry sump any day Big grin

There has to be a local engineering firm with the capability to grind cranks. Have a trawl through the yellow pages etc. Try to use someone who comes reccommended though.
