When the cars in gear at 3000 odd revs i get a rattling noise from the CAT area.

I have just had a new CAT and silencer fitted, but the rattle occured before this. it only happens when im in gear! frustrating when your trying to point it out to the bloke at the Exhaust place! Dry anyone know what this might be ? it definatly sounds external.. Heatshield perhaps ?

Heat shield or engine mount maybe? Dunno

EDIT: Engine mount would be more like a droning vibration than a rattle so probably the heatshield

As blaze said, i'd place my bets on it been the manifold heatsheild or the engine mount been loose.

Both came loose on my a few weeks back, quick tighten up and they were fine.

had the same prob on my black 6 a few months back. One of the 4 manifold heat shield bolts had come loose. And of corse is was the very awkward one on the lower drivers side...

This happened to me and i found out it was the catalytic converter, the previous owner bought an aftermarket Jobie rubbish, the seal had come loose so the inner part of it was moving around making a rattle at those revs.

Thanks for the info! ill take all this on board when I get under the car! as birk said most likely something to do with the heat shield or the engine bolts. I had a new sportier CAT put in recently so it cant be that.

I am getting this but not when I rev the car. It's evident when I turn the ignition on/off when the car is warm. Could this be down to the cat?

Sounds like it's coming from the gear stick area.

Its the cat area for sure, could be the heat shield most likely.

Whilst it could be the cat, I believe that a shot exhaust gasket at the Manifold/cat join can cause this (it did for me anyway).

Get a genuine Pug fitting kit (about £18), the others seem to come with the wrong nuts and no spacers etc. and generally can sometimes be more pain that they are worth for the reduced price. If this wasn't changed when the cat was changed, I would almost guarantee that the gasket is causing your rattling.
