This is actually a problem with the wifes 1.4 Y plate Megane. When she tries to start it (especially after she has just driven it and needs to restart it), the starter motor turns fast, but does not turn the engine over. It will eventually start but takes many tries.

I have not had a look at it properly yet but could do with some pointers about what it might be. Does it sound like a tooth is missing from the starter motor? When I get back I will try it and see if moving the car slightly when in gear allows it to then turn the engine over.

Does anyone have any ideas/solutions?

Cheers

Sounds like the stater motor is not throwing out properly to catch the flywheel. Probably a new starter motor bud, my Mums 4x4 does exactly the same thing and a starter sorted it. Wink

could be flywheel ring gear with missing teeth: starter will turn but not be in contact with engine. Need to remove gearbox to replace but can sometimes check condition of ring gear by removing starter and looking through hole

Cheers everyone.

I will first take a look at the starter on the weekend when I have a bit more time. Sods law - it never does it when I am about. I took it out for a spin, stopped several times and re-started it - nothing.

A little additional information would be that it will eventually start, would that rule out missing teeth on the flywheel etc and point more towards the solenoid which engages the starter? Unsure

She does not move the car when it happens so all the transmission would remain in the same location.

I hope it is not the flywheel as that is not a job I fancy doing!

I also need to change the VSS, gearbox oil and engine oil on mine this weekend before going to the F1 next week. I will be busy!

probably will be starter soleniod then, easier job than a flywheel (and cheaper too)!
