i believe my bearings have gone in my rear beam, my driver side back wheel has a camber to it, now iv been told the rebuild kits could sort this? is this true? or is it worth buying a new beam? 2nd hand obviously.

a rebuild can sort it if the main crossmember is still serviceable, you can;t tell how it is inside till you have it all apart though.

a replacement beam can be had quite easily and can come off anything if you already have a gti6 beam as you can fit all your gti6 bits like the torsion bars +ARB.

I wouldn't just fit an unknown beam to a car though, at the very least stick a bearing and seal kit on another beam before fitting it.

don't pay any more than £60 for a beam, bearings and seals are from £35 depending on what you need.

because the bearings are shot, the axle will be damaged....

Razz

it could look like this...

but you never know until you strip it apart!

I sorted CUJ's beam a few weeks ago, looked perfectly fine, no camber whatsoever, but it needed two arm shafts on top of the 4 bearings and 4 seals.

No Obviously its going to have some wear but nothing has given up yet. Will probably rebuild it next summer so it just needs to last until then.

how do you know its fine? you haven't had it apart, it shouldn't have ANY play...

I can't remember how many miles CUJ had on his car, but his was so near to needing the tube replacing as well as the shafts and bearings.

mileage has little or no bearing on it either.

Theres a small bit movement where the bolt goes through the bottom of the strut ( You can lift it very slightly before it pushes up the strut). Not had it apart but with the wheels off and the back in the air there isn't any unusual movement or noises and it feels fine when driving so no need to strip it yet Smile
Probably fall apart next time Im driving now that I said that.

Welshpug is right, you really don't know what you will find until you take them apart, I took my old one apart recently to have a nosy, beam was fine, one arm shaft was reusable (-just) but the needle rollers had clearly bedded into the shaft and the shaft needed rotating 180 degrees in order to be reused (was fooked really I suppose), the other side on the other hand was fit for scrap only, this beam was on my car and appeared perfectly fine.
