Sounds like a line's popped somewhere and brake fluid p*ssed onto a hot engine = smoke

Just my two cents

Something has let go, is there any fluid left in the reservoir?

If your brakes have 'returned' it sounds like someone hit the nail on the head earlier, a binding caliper boiled up the fluid causing massive fade. The pedal would sink and require pumping to get any pressure. The smoke was probably your pads burning.
