Rear Beam update.

Its f**ked, simple as that.

Well, not all of it.... i managed after huge amounts of pursuasion (ie Sledge hammer/lump hammer/toffee hammer/wd40/wd60 and lots of lube ) to get the bas**rd beam apart.

The torsion bars came out without too much greif, however the one trailing arm shaft was stuck in the beam tube so had to be seriously pursuaded (at 830am on saturday morning) to come out. On inspection, the n/s trailing arm shaft bearings have disolved, mullering the beam tube as they collapsed, so its game over for the VTS beam.

I took a chance on it at £100, as the bars alone fetch £90, so it was a risk worth taking! The bars i will get blasted and powdercoated and then fitted into the beam on my car (which i know is a good one) so no harm done.

The bars in all their glory...

Impressive eh?

In the meantime, the car has come back from painting, with only the Front grille, and hockey sticks to be refitted, as they were painted off the car.

Ive been experimenting with the front Peugeot badge. A lot of folks paint the chrome surround black, but i thought it try and simulate it before painting to see what you lot think.

I used the patented pikey "wrap" method, ie Black insulation tape. (Note - the tape was just to give me an idea - it wont be permanent !!)

I might go the whole hog and order a new bonnet badge, then paint the exterior surround on the old one so i can chop and change when i feel like it?

Opinions?

Time for a decent update.

My day off today so decided to jump in at the deep and and start stripping the rear end! flasher

Jacked the car up and put it on two identically sized axle stands. Measured the distance between arch and top of brake disc centre and its within approx 4mm, so thats a good starting point, ie not siezed one side.

Heres what it looked like before i really got stuck in.

I lowered the spare wheel down and removed the wheel and its carrier and bracket. The wheel was "refurbed" in satin black a while ago, and will be cleaned and refitted when done. The wheel cage/carrier will be blasted and powdercoated gloss black at Bournes. The bracket, along with all other fittings will be de-rusted and zinc plated.

Next job was to remove the Anti Roll Bar. Supposed to be an easy process, couple of 13mm bolts, the wind a suitable bolt in from the o/s/r to push the end plate off the splines on the o/s/r to allow the ARB to be withdrawn from the nearside. This is in an ideal world, not a 10 yr old Peugeot world.

Anyway the end plate wouldnt come off, the bolt i was winding in, stripped the threads in the endplate, because the splines were rusted together! headbang . Knowing i had a complete Xsara VTS roll bar and end plate in the garage meant i could get hardcore with powertools. I managed to cut the end plate off with a grinder and had to drill the splines out of the o/s/r before hammering the bas**rd thing out..

I then dug out the eccentric washers which hold the Torsion Bars in place. Here you can see the end of the tosrion bars, and the hole where the ARB has come from.

Once that was done it was a case of removing the exhaust - in suprisingly good nick - will be kept as a good spare, and then removing the exhaust heatsheild, and assesing the condition of the boot floor.

It doesnt look too bad tbh bearing in mind theres no underseal on any of it, just primer from the factory, back in 1999. Its had a towbar on at some time (wtf?) and there are brackets left on from that which will be removed in time.

Next jobs are to slidehammer the Torsion Bars out, remove the shocks and then see what condition the bearings are in, within the beam. I suspect that as im going to these lengths, it makes perfect sense to refurb the beam properly with new bearings and seals throughout.

Plan is to paint the boot floor/chassis legs and then refit all the components when they are refurbed, ie zinc plated/painted etc etc.

Comments welcome as always

Im not sure what its for, its not a pipe, its a white threaded plastic thingy, i assume its something to do with the spare wheel, however nothing was connected to it?Unsure

Aaah, cheers for that, no sign of the other bits of the spare wheel lock so they must have gone west years ago.

Tuesday Update -

The exhaust heat shield (above the back box) was a bit shabby, so i rubbed it down, prepped and then painted it in VHT silver paint. Looks better than it did.

Before

Prepped -

And Painted -

Managed to get the beam seperated and off the car, the slide hammer which was mean to draw the torsion bars out of each trailing arm, simply pulled the whole arm out of the beam tube! Thanks to TinTin for the loan of the slide hammer.

The beam in bits off the car

Heres the trailing arm shafts close up. I think the bearing surfaces are fine and these will be used again.

Finally a close up of the beam tube, its dry in there (apart from the grease), all the bearings are intact and so are the end seals. Even so i have the bearing kit to renew them anyway - which was the plan all along.

Next job is to free the gti6 torsion bars off the training arms, prepare and paint the trailing arms, fit new disc back plates etc etc, the refurb the beam tube and fit the new bearings, and end seals.

The beam mounts are still on the car, they will be replaced with genuine Pug ones (next month), once they are removed i can prep and paint the boot floor area.

One final thing today was to get two of the new tyres i had (Yokohama S drive 195 45 16) fitted to the new Compomotive wheels.

Heres a pic of what they look like.

To say i'm pleased with the wheels is an understatement.

Next update should see lots of things painted.

Comments welcome as always.

Matt

When i lowered my 6 i didnt have a slide hammer so i put a large socket over where the torsion bar sits in the arm, then got an m8 (i think) bolt with a nut screwed right up to the head and a washer behind it and screwed that into the torsion bar. I then wound the nut down the bolt onto the washer (and onto the socket) and this pulled the bar out.

You could try that to get the torsion bars out.

Those wheels are reallllllllllllllly nice,

Got the torsion bars out now, just managed to undo all the torx bolts holding the disc shield on as well. So far its being kind to me.

I'll leave the abs sensors in situ as they look comfy where they are!

Got a bucket of Deox c solution on the go now in the garage with all the nuts, bolts, clips, screws from the driver side soaking away merrily.

Theres a few pics on the net of them (or the original group a Speedline version) on various pugs, i'll see if ive got copies.

Yes its a mark on the wheel caused by me being a twat and catching it in the garage whilst moving a beam about..... its marked the powdercoat but not gone through it.

Mini update time.

Ive spent the last few nights doing stuff in the garage, namely prepping and painting stuff.

The rear beam tube (as you all know)is the manky yellow thing in this picture.

I cleaned all the rust off the end brackets, sanded the main tube down with the DA sander, etch primed then painted with Plastikote yellow gloss paint.

Before painting it, i removed the bearings out of the tube using various "methods", including strong language!

The old bearings and seals are on the left LOL

Below is just one side of the beam bearings, they're identical both sides.

Also ive collected the new beam to body mounts - heres new and old, side by side.

Whilst at Peugeot I ordered some new rear disc backing plates as the old ones were quite corroded and they would never look mint.

Old ones...

New ones !!! Yay!

As they come unfinished, and would rust readily, i've keyed them with a scotchbrite pad and etch primed them this evening. I'll be painting them tomorrow night.

Next job is to fit the bearings in the beam tube, then the seals, and then crack on with the boot floor prep and paint.

I have brake hoses on order with Peugeot, and I might have to get 2 new rear hard brake lines as well, because the ends are worn, and might not seal again easily.

Updates soon.
