Just had my car refused for mot. Couldn't test it because it was overheating and the fan wasn't kicking in to cool it down. He didn't want to push it in case blowing the engine.

Now, it was working fine the other day and as we know, these cars do get a bit hot anyway and usually when I stop in prolonged traffic, the temperature goes up and will eventually reach 100+ degrees if in traffic for 10 minutes or more etc... Now the only thing I've done recently is taken my k&n off and cleaned + oiled it with proper k&n cleaner, now all of a sudden it will reach 110 degrees in almost no time at all and temperature won't go down by itself.

Does anyone have the slightest idea what might be going on???? Help please

Do the fans operate correctly?

Unplug the brown sensor with the ignition on. Both fans should run at low speed for a few seconds and then switch to high speed.

Sorted this one, for now. Followed gazzerdamen's FAQ on coolant and locations of relays etc... And dissed that the bearings were dry inside both shafts of both fans. Removed the grille and hockey sticks, Put each fan at TDC, removed the the screw that holds them in, pulled them forward slightly and sprayed WD40 straight onto the shaft and hey presto, they work now both with brown plug out to bypass and with it plugged in and with the car at higher temperature.

Cheers also Rich Thumbs up good to know it was just rust/something mechanical rather than electrical.
