Just a quick one,

I need to change the hoses on the dturbo.

I need to get a brake pipe spanner as i tried with an open end one before and failed and destroyed the nut.

I know its an 11mm but i have heard people say you also need a 9 and a 14mm as well??

I will be doing all 4, so maybe the other size spanners are needed for the rears?

EDIT: Just released i only have four hoses and the the car is a p1, didn't the p1 use 6 hoses?

Only the veryearly cars had 6lines.
My s16 was an l plate and had four rear flexis.

Ah OK, hopefully I'm OK then its a 96 model.

any idea on the spanner sizes?

DTurbo has drums, hence 4 lines.

later P1 disk rear cars were 4 line, 4th august 95 was when the 5th+6th hoses were deleted so the changeover was on the S16, all 6's afaik will be 4 hoses.

I think you'll need a 17mm possibly, but not a brake pipe spanner, Draper do the 10/11mm spanner which is all you need apart from the 14mm for the male end of the front hoses.

8mm I think for the bleed nipples, but been a whikle since I worked on the rear end of a 306 with drums, as it happens I will be doing so tomorrow LOL

Would be greatful if you could confirm the sizes of the rear spanners needed.

I guess you haven't got a standard 10 to 19mm set of spanners? I'd get down to halfords and check their special offers Thumbs up

Yeah i have got standard spanners but last time i used a standard spanner to do this it caused me alot of emotional issues Smile

Glad your be alright, i on the other hand probably will have trouble LOL

Halfords do some nice flare spanners.

The draper 10 and 11mm spanner is a good bet.

I use the Facom's , superb quality .


but if you already rounded the banjo bolt head as i did,
you'll going to suffer.
first you'll need to throw away the steel hose , and it's a job from hell.
then , don't even think of routing the new steel hose with all it's bents , it won't work.
the steel hose could be installed only when you strip the engine from the car .
the solution i worked out can be seen in the picture

the nut i destroyed

the banjo bolt PSA used have tendency to stick ' and the steel it's made of is too soft and round easly,
the method used in american cars are far more superior,
if you can , do conversion to the american way :

if you are sure its not going to come undone easy then i wouldnt even use the brake pipe spanner id just get the mole grips straight on it and make sure its a firm grip, as soon as its cracked off then use the brake pipe spanner

Chop the pipe off and get a 6 sided socket on there.

Is it a good idea to replace the union nut?

Can you pick these up from halfords or any motor factors?

To replace the nut on the meal pipe u need a brake pipe flareing tool.
Id advise you try not to damage it

There might be not enough length in the pipe to play with .
i'd rather prepare for replacing the pipe with complete new one,cut it to three section and flare it.
the flare should be adequate for braking with 37 degree angle.

Failed

So having bought my jack Axel stands and a flare spanner

Start to do the job and notice the CV boot is destroyed.

I have therefore binned the idea off and taking it to Carl's in Norfolk, I'm now going to the pub with what little money i have left.

have you ever tried to flare steel pipes? VERY difficult...

I went to replace my rear calipers yesterday> Now the nut cracks off easy enough however it is turning the pipe with it.

As I am in France with no spare line, I nipped it back up LOL

I will get some new stuff on return to the UK

errrr.

Drove home from work, brakes were being quite soft - Ive had a hose leaking. Noticed it a week ago and ordered a new hose.

old hose was dripping like a dirty hooker.


Got to the nut and it was completely seized and slightly rounded. Gave it some WD, an 11mm and a couple of light cracks and it just lost it. I've ground the spline part and removed it that way.


ISSUE:

I've now got a cut brake line. WTF do I do? I've cut it right behind the nut, so it will take a new fitting, but it's steel - I've flared thin copper pipes before, no issue, but this looks nasty.


Do I have to remove the entire brake line? Does anyone know the dia of the pipe? Hoping i can get a flange tool, an olive and a fitting.


I've worked on heaps of French cars and that is by far the worst design Ive ever seen. Lame.

photo might help but you need a proper brake spanner really rather than open ended ones. you could also try using some P-grips which are like crocodile teeth (for plumbing usually) to try undoing it. they grip tighter as you turn them

Thanks Rikky. I had to cut the steel line as it was just rooted. Taken tomorrow off work to get it sorted.


Any suggestions on flaring the pipe?

tbh every time i've had a brake issue i've just repplaced with 3/16 copper pipe and m10 fittings i think, with a little DIY flaring kit off ebay. the steel stuff is good but too hard to work with when replacement is involved unless you are buying the dealer pre-formed lines

where is it leaking exactly? or which part needs replacement?
