Ok short story is i bought a cheap gti6 with engine damadge. Picture explains it

Went up a steep kerb took out underside of the front. holes in sump, snapped driveshaft and snapped gearbox mount OUCH!

The guy said he turned it off striaght away but to be honest can never trust private sellers so i took it as a fooked engine.

I now have another sump. i was planning on rebuilding the engine.

But i wondered if i should try fitting new sump and filling up the oil and seeing if it will start.

Is this a very very bad idea or if damage is already done then no more can be caused.

I may sound a bit Blink Crazy but i just had the idea.

Any help appreciated thankyou

hmmmm, your on my line of thinking.

But what if they really had turned it off just intime so there is minimal damage would starting it up cause more?

Will be removing sump and getting my dad to check for me as hes done engine rebuilds whereas i know sweet FA.

I plan on learning fast though Smile

Start it up if it goes bang put a new engine in it cheaper and quicker than a rebuild

Why don't you just whip no four big end cap off whilst the sump is off?
Then you will know.

First, sump off and have a look.
Try turning it over by hand with a socket on the crank pulley- ignition off and plugs out-if it turns over then sump on fill with oil and try it on the starter-plugs out, in each case listen. If it won't turn over or makes bad noises stop. If it turns over OK then give it a go- if the bottom end has run without oil it will tell you quite soon.
A second hand engine may be a better economic bet than a rebuild- carl (mechanical-repairs) was recently selling several.

fit a new sump, i am almost certain the engine will be fine. If the shaft was snapped and gearbox mount broke i cant see him leaving it running

bung new sump on and fill it up and run it, see how it sounds. if the impact/force was quite bad, the inertia switch should have turned it off anyway Unsure

or stalled, not many people remember to press the clutch when in the middle of a crash, too busy concentrating on other matters.

Thats off a spare bottom end? Not the holed sump one? If so you're spare bottom end is f*cked! They are bits of bearing basically, if you ran that bottom end it would knock like f*ck, probaly seize up and smash a hole in the block pretty quick...

yeah spare one that was knocking, but like i say i just wanted the sump. But is good to have one sitting on a bench so i can learn from it.

Havn't taken off the broken sump yet. weather has been rubbish plus i need to know how to take the chain off the pump so i can remove it to check out the bottom end properly.

When you take the old sump off, check for any signs of metal. Obviously bits as big as your example a sign of complete bearing disintegration, but if it's been running a seconds without oil the pieces will probably be smaller.

If you don't see any immediate signs of damaged bearings you can either drop the shells off an inspect them quickly (gives piece of mind) or just stick oil in and try it. When you do start it, listen for any signs of knocking at between 1.5 - 2k rpm.

Well i got the engine started today, started up no problem. Bit tappy though.

Now i can get the engine out and start stripping apart. I think the engine must have had a snapped cambelt at some point thats why its tapping
