Hi all,

I am wanting to make the AC button in my Hdi be a fan override switch. I have no fans at present as Im going slimline asap.

I believe it can be done, has anyone got any knowledge on this?

Many thanks,

Matt

It can be done but make sure your aircon pump is disconnected or removed altogether, just bridge pins 1 & 2 on the pressure sensing valve by your washer bottle, this will turn your fans on at low speed when you press the aircon button but will raise the engine tickover speed slightly, alternatively bridge pins 1 & 4 (i think) and that will turn the fans on at high speed when the aircon button is pressed

*note* this does not turn on the fans when the outside temp goes below 5 degrees for some reason, -must be some form of safety thing built into the ecu, Dunno

Hi Dave,

Tried this today and it didn't seem to work, I have disconnected the AC compressor, and bridged the 2 correct pins.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Matt

You need to bridge pins 1 & 3 matey...

EDIT:

Just seen its for a HDi?..Not sure if it will be the same but the GTI-6 are pins 1 & 3 bor bridging the aircon so the fans come on Happy

Hi all,

It's a Hdi, had my uncle( an electircian) helping today, he had the hanyes and has got it to work when the thermostat comes on, unsure on getting it to come on by bridging the pins.

We spent a good few hours on it.

Thanks,

Matt

Were you having fan issues by chance, ie not switching on?

I'm having issues with my fans for a second time. First time one fan had lost it's 12V feed so you got no fans (series) until it switched to parallel and the one working fan kicks in on overtime.

This time the other fan has now decided it likes to run with the ignition off and the car locked. Dry

Hi,

I had the car for nearly 2 years without the fan coming on once. A fair few feeds had the 12v's down at the radiator connection, and my uncle is very sure that the fans should come on now when they warm enough.

I just need a really hot day to test it.

I have dissconected the compressor and also got rid of the pressure sensing valve.

Thanks,

Matt

I have this issue were 1 fan starts slow then second fan kicks in overtime and the first stops??

This needs to be FAQ'd I had to use trial and error to do mine. Although I used a paperclip in stead of wire to bridge my points.

Probably the outside temp sensor, donīt know about newer models but on mine itīs inside the intake ducting to the fan, under all the plastic stuff in front of the windscreen.

Hi all,

Have been playing a little bit more with this, when I bridged the pins in the first place nothing happened, I did have the white connection to the AC pump disconnected. This weekend I reconnected the AC pump and having the bridge connected it made the Ac pump turn with the AC on.

Should I have the AC pump connected to allow the AC button power the fan? As I am going to remove the AC pump ASAP,

Many thanks,

Matt

Roughly on top of the AC compressor, it's a white quite thin but long plastic connector.

cheers -

also, i have problems with my fans at the moment which im trying to sort out, i think it is the relays or bitron, and unplugging the blown plug doesnt get them on. I hoped bridging pins 1 and 3 on the a/c plug by the washer bottle would override but it didn't work - would this be expected if i had the relay / bitron problems?

Cheers

Well yes, if you've got a fundamental wiring/motor/relay problem then bridging a sensor won't help No

Update to this
Bridge pins 1&2 = low speed from both fans
Bridge pins 1&3 = high speed from both fans
Low speed didn't have no effect on cooling down for me.

Can you elaborate on the scenario?

A correctly working standard cooling system will control the temperature just fine in pretty much all situations, even in the height of summer (the same cooling system is fitted to the 306 in far hotter climates than ours).

It's only the supercharged builds that seem to actually need extra cooling, and that's better achieved with a larger radiator rather than a botch job on the fans.

I am probably to blame for all this bodge'ing LOL , as Rich said if you are standard then getting the original system to work correctly is the way to go, the only reason I bodged mine was I found the original system was a little slow getting my temperatures down due to my large fmic in the way of the airflow, I have now fooked off the original system altogether and use an aftermarket (Revotec) adjustable temperature controller/sensor which I have set to turn both fans on at high speed at 95 degrees, the only reason I have done this is because of the supercharger conversion and there is no need for this on a standard motor,

This setup works well on my car, pic of adjustable sensor in rad,
