Since I bought my six a few weeks ago,

which you may have seen here, I have done a fair bit of reading on the this board.
I have to say that I was quite surprised at the number of threads about cars being broken for the smallest thing. 'breaking my 6, ashtray full' and suchlike.
I paid good money for my car (peanuts in real terms, but good for a car with a 'full ashtray'), because it had obviously been loved, and was just in need of a bit more.
I did think about rebuilding the engine myself, but got as far as pricing pistons at the dealersShock
I got in touch with Carl (mechanical repairs) about an engine.
'I have just the thing for you' he says, 'the old motor out of my Rallye. 50k ish miles, head ok & new head gasket, crank ok new main & big end shells, new water pump, belt & tensioners. Yours for....

'One million dallars!'

I collected it today.
As it is that valuable I had to put it in the house.

Even Mrs Tea did not complain about it being in the house when I told her how special it wasBig grin

I am going to put a new clutch and cable on it before it goes in, and whatever else I might think of in the meantime.

There you are, perhaps the title should have been,
'6 reprieved, ashtray being emptied'

I took my engine out today.
First job was to build the 'workshop', just incase.

On Carl's advice I went through the bottom. (so to speak)
Had to get it high enough, which was 32" at the front.

With the subframe off, it went down quite easily.

It wasn't mounted that way round in the car. I had to turn it or it landed on the crane's legs which made it too high to bring it out.

I took the gearbox off and the clutch was chuffed.
luckily I have one in stock ready.

I have to get all the bits off this

Transferred onto this

Still plenty to do yet.

Things have been moving very slowly in the Tea house.
I always say you can't rush a good job.
My problem is that I can't even rush a crap job.
I have started putting bits on the new engine.

First I checked the calibration of my torque wrench.

So I could fit the flywheel & clutch feeling half confident it will not fall off.

I have swapped the Rallye thermostat housing.

For the three sensor one. I put on a new hose elbow as the old one was cracked. New by-pass hose too.

Got the A/C PAS & alternator on with a replacement for the broken tensioner & a new belt.

I washed out the oil cooler with petrol and fitted it with a new seal & gen. filter.

I have a stash of bits to be going on with.

I know it is not as exciting as a supercharger, but I like it.

I had some bare wires on the oil sensor.

I didn't fancy paying fifty odd quid for a new one so I used some plasti dip rubberised paint on them. It should do the trick.

I guess this is why the A/C does not work

The PO paid over seven hundred quid to have the head gasket done. The garage that did it must have bought silicon in bulkRoll eyes

It is starting to look a bit more like an engine now.

So I put the engine together and thought that looks nice.
Mrs Tea says will it fit through the door? Dunno
I never thought of that Doh

I just can't face getting the tape measure out and checking at the moment, so we will have to wait & see.

So to take my mind off it I thought I would tackle the engine bay.

There were a few rusty bits, the worst of which were where the clips are for the radiator hose.

I have tried various rust treatments in the past, but this time I thought I would have a go with the Bilt Hamber DEOX GEL.
The results were outstanding.

I have to say that it is the best rust treatment I have ever used.

The rust just dissolves, fantasticCool

I stuck a bit of Kurust on to cover the bare metal for now.

This is the driver's side, I don't want to talk about the passenger's side at the momentAngry

My old cam covers had suffered a silicon death at the hands of some garage that did the head gasket for the PO.
I posted in the wanted section for some replacements and someone sent me a PM.
I was offered a pair of covers with good seals that he would paint up for me.
I paid good money for them so I could just bolt them on.
One less job to do.
Or so I thought.....
The guy had just wagged over old oil and muck, no prep or primer.

As soon as you touched it it fell offAngry

I stripped the 'paint' off, which did not take much doing.
Gave them a light bead blast then etch primed.

A bit of silver and lacquer and Bob's your uncle

I should have just bought some cheaper unpainted ones in the first place.
The guy I bought the covers from is either totally incompetent, or a skanking b**tard.
I have my own view.

Thanks.Smile

I forgot to show them back on.

At the moment I am trying to get rid of all the jubilee clips and replace them with the original type clips.
I scrounged a few off Carl the other day but I still need some more.

Which is the proper fuel pipe,

The smooth rubber or the fabric braided?
I suppose they should both be the same stuff?
Not had much time to do any proper work on it for a while, too busy at work.

The "proper stuff" hard non braided type, that inevitably leaks at the many joins that peugeot insist on putting in them. It is easier to replace with two 8mm and 10mm lengths. Although to do the job properly you need a reducer on the 10mm hose for the end that goes to the tank.

Do you recommend 'fixing' it even if it is not yet broken?

If there aren't any cracks in it then it should be ok.

You should really treat your inlet mani and fuel rail to the same paint treatment the rocker covers got, they look really smart.

Yes I was pleased how well they turned out.

Mrs Tea is getting less enthusiastic about having an engine next to the washing machine, so it will have to stay like it is for now.
I think I may get another manifold to do and swap it over at a later date.

I have got some serious work to do before the motor goes back in.

A while ago I didn't want to think about the N/S chassis, here is why;

What do you think about that?

Well I'll tell you what I thought.
'Oh bother, I am mildly disappointed to find that the front of my car is all bent.'

First job was to measure it all up, then measure up a straight one and see what I had.
The damage was all infront of the strut towers and the important bits were where they should be.

That is good, now I need a plan.

I know, angle grinder........

Cut the top of the chassis rail and see how bent it is.

Infact, cut the lot off...

Got a used front corner and fettled it up

Some new bits aswell

Need to start putting bits back on, it looks very sad at the moment

They all have that, its the smaller parts sticker that gives the game away, come on Jon, thats a barcode style sticker, unsure what its for though.

Started piecing it together

Put the top in first, this shows me where the chassis rail needs to go.

Put the slam panel on to make sure the gap was correct.

This was how I left it tonight, held together with self tappers.

I am quite happy with the way it is all slotting together.
Once it is all screwed together with self tappers I can measure up, make any adjustments if needed then weld it all up.
