i only seem to get this problem once every few months
when i'm changing down a gear (usually lower gears) when i dip the clutch an take it out of gear the car will stall but if i get it into the lower gear an lift the clutch again the car kicks back into life

anyone any ideas what the problem might be?

Is this not effectively just bump starting it? If it's just stalled you'll still have the ignition on: so the car's ready to start. Then bringing the clutch pedal up (in second for example) cranks the engine just like the starter motor, then it fires.

My old XT used to do that when there was too much air look for air leaks round the throttle body and manifold?

The issue of stalling when dipping the clutch would seem to be the quintessential problem that a lot of our cars suffer, no?

Therefore, the obligatory stepper motor investigation would seem to be a good course of action to take.
