Finally got round to solving lateral and vertical play I had in the upper steering column.

I can't believe the difference it has made. There was only a small amount of play... +/- 2-3mm.... but it made the car feel horrible, like being totally disconnected from the wheels/steering. Any bump or uneveness in the road surface and it would flap about.

It was a pretty easy job to do and the new column was only

Right, talk to me about this and how you did it. When my steering wheel is adjusted in the up/down and locked off, if I hold the wheel it will still move a couple of mm.

How did you do this? Hyper

fit a better condition unit LOL

also when fitting make sure the right mount of column sticks out of the top, the wheel can foul on the top of the bracket or the plastics if it sits too far in.

It's a fairly simple job, haynes is good enough if you were to get stuck anywhere. Off the top of my head.

1)Disconnect Battery
2)Remove steering column shrouds (3 screws)
3)Un bolt airbag (torx bits round the back of the steering wheel)
4)Un bolt steering wheel (T50 torx bit I think), it'll probably need a fair whack from behind (aye aye!) to get it off
5)Unscrew airbag wiring ring, unclip connector from steering column and remove
6)Unclip all stalk wiring connectors and unbolt stalk assembly, remove.
7)Remove fusebox/relay cover
8)Pull out air vent ducting from under steering column
9)Unplug Ign Barrel connectors
10)Unclip immobiliser ring from Ign Barrel (2 clips need bending out)
11)Make ref marks on steering column Universal joint (so the new one can be put on at the same steering angle)
11)Unbolt universal joint (13mm bolt)
12)Unbolt 4x 13mm bolts holding steering column to mounting
13)Withdraw steering column
14)Unscrew Ign barrel to steering column fixing screw
15)Put key in ign and turn to position between A and M
16) Push in catches and slide ingnition barrel out of steering column (bit fiddly with the wiring and connectors but can be done). It might help to remove the height adjuster on the steering column.
17)Put a mark on the new column in the same place on the universal joint as on the old one.
18)And heres the most overly quoted phrase ever - Refitting is a reversal of removal!

So all I need is a new steering column? Did you get a new one or a breaker on?

It was one from a car being broken. I'm fairly sure all 306's have the same column. but double check that

I've done this change too. I think I damaged the column when I took my standard steering wheel off to change for a different one and it developed a bit of free-play. Most annoying thing.
I got a 2nd hand one from the wreckers and fitted it. I don't know what 306 it is from but I had to modify it a little bit to make it fit as some of the fittings were slightly different.
What a difference it makes!
