My cambelt snapped 2 weeks ago. There were 8 valves bent. We replaced all 16 valves to be sure. Now the car is tapping very loud, before the cambelt snapped it ran very smooth. Its sounds like a "click" click" "click". So we replaced 4 hydraulic lifters in the area where the noise came from. But its still there. I hope we didnt bent a new valve while fitting the head back on. Or maybe its just a bad oil? its a cheap 5w40 full synthetic.

Let me know what you think!

Cheers Felix

you could have bent the valves when you put the head back on/timed it up if you didnt do it right.

Tomorrow i will do a compression check at work from wich i should see if a valve is bent or not. If the valve guides are damaged i need a new head right?

From my experience of timing belt failures you usually end up with most if not all valves bent. I reckon you've still got a slightly bent valve inside, or as others have said, have bent one during refitting / timing.

if the valves looked anything like this then you will be definitely needing some new guides

*update*

now we replaced all 16 valves and 16 hydraulic lifters. Its still there Angry. When i start the engine from cold the first 20 sec you cant hear anything and then its getting louder...If the guides are damaged it should be all the time, right?

Are you sure you're fitting the head correctly and timing it up properly?

When i had a tapper, the tapping was very faint untill after 30 seconds or so then it became louder....

@ welshpug: dont know how good the oil pressure is but before the belt snapped it was good. Is the oil pressure affected by a timing belt snap?

@ lwgti6: Im pretty sure we timed it up correctly engine runs pretty smooth except of tapping.

@ cooper666: No, we didnt replace the guides.

BTW: Engine compression is perfect on every cylinder

Felixthecat - You will need to remove the cylinder head and remove and inspect all 16 valves, and then inspect the guides.

I suspect all 16 valve seats will need recutting and you have probably bent a couple of guides. The tapping issue will not be hydraulic lifters, no point spending any more money on these. No

Stan.

Hmm but valves went in easily without any force and they didnt have any play. Thinking of getting a used head or a recon head....another few hundret bucks Sad. Is anyone interested in a tapping head with all new valves and lifters? Big grin

If i would find my damn camera cable i could post up a video.

Another Update:

Engine sometimes simply stops running when rolling to traffic light and clutch is pressed. I have to restart it.
