I had a knocking last week. Checked the spark plugs and one was loose. Noise has gone now.

maybe a knock sensor is at fault, i would get a diagnostics read out done, if its any electrical fault it should come up with the fault saving you lots of effort and time.
failing that try high octaine fuel.

think i might of found something........
a while ago i onpened the oil filler cap and there was a piece of black plastic that had snapped off something, I think it could be one of the bits ive pointed to on the picture. what are these plastic things for?? the problem with the knocking im getting now i think it might be abit more of the plastic rattleing round in the head

doesnt seem to be any problems with oil, definitly lots of oil getting in there lol( i opened the oil cap while engine running, with a nice fresh cleaned engine bay lol.) do you think it might be abit of the plastic bit stuck in there knocking about?? how much roughly would it cost to open the head up and have a look? is it big job?

You just need to remove the cam covers with a Torx bit.

you say a rattle\knocking sound at idle is it only at idle or does it rattle more through the rev range?????
the reason for high octaine fuel is the engine has knock censors and will adjust the timing to suit the fuel (basicly) its worth a try.
also if the plastic you broke off was a small piece surely it has gone through into the oil filter!!!
can you remeber how big it was?

If its a bent valve or rattling big end the tapping will remain throughout the revv range, i should no, my 6 had 10 bent valves when i bought it! Good job i already new that and had a head ready lol.
More likely to be a warn out hydraulic lifter if it goes away when rev'd up or doesnt always do it.

if the black plastic thing has come off then wont the oil spray bar be in 2 pieces??
hence another bit of oil bar loose in there, and not enough oil getting to the end area where its missing??
just a thought
