in the past few weeks I have really started to notice that my car, presumably the engine itself is making what can best be described as a Tsst T t Tsst noise in any gear at any time roughly between 3000 and 3300rpm.

It doesn't make this noise any where else in the rev -range.

I'm assuming that something is untoward inside but engines are new territory to me so I'm hoping someone might have an idea where I can start on getting to the bottom of this.

cheers for reading Wink

If its only happening at certain revs it may be a resonant frequency thing. Could be so many things...

Heat shield vibrating on exhaust? Exhaust system?

Aftermarket gear linkages did this on mine

Some members have detailed a funny noise similar to this and it has been a leaking exhaust manifold!

Any else got any thoughts

Hello to answer all the above i am using Halfords fully synthetic oil, its done a few miles tho and could do with changing. Exhaust manifold is a possibility i got lightly shunted 18 months ago so a small crack could of had time to get worse by now. think i need to pin down the area noise is coming from a bit more. thanks for suggestions.

Does it only do it in gear or can you hear when you rev the car with the bonnet open?

Does it make the noise in neutral?

If so rev the engine from the engine bay and try to isolate where its coming from.

If not could be transmission related.

I'm at the lady's for the weekend now but when i was trying to work this out last week while in the middle of something else i revved the engine and didnt get it to make the same noise, but then i wasnt sure where 3000-3300 was kinda noisy that end. will get my house mate to do the honours monday.

Is it possible the gear box would make noises at certain revs?? as that feels like crap anyway!!

Depends if its the same gear at the same revs every time.

Does it occur out of gear or if you dip the clutch when the noise happens?

finally got round to writing back,

its not the gear box, it comes from the left hand side of the engine timing belt side i'm thinking it could be a tensioner bearing or something would that only sound at certain revs??
