Hello Everyone,
With winter being quite cold here (-9C yesterday) I noticed that although the heater is working it somehow does not produce the heat I expect from it.
Its not cold, not hot, sort of mild?
Water temp is fine, no overheat, bled OK, no airlocks it seems. Also, the heater matrix does not fog the windows, nor does it leak.
The higher rpm I put the vent to the cooler the air.
Also, with higher engine RPMs the air seems to get hotter, but cools off when the car is stationary or when the cooler vents kick in.
Heater matrix on its way out? Or clogged?
Suggestions welcome.
Thanks!

PS: coolant level is normal, and it is filled with antifreeze from Pug (100%, no water added).

What settings do you have the vents on? I think the GTI6 may have electronic control of the heaters so something there could be malfunctioning?

P1 S16/XSI, but is the same as GTi6.
It is partially automatic, yes.
The electronics don't seem to malfunction for all functions work. Its only the amount of heat that I find appalling.

I think the heat selector is a cable though right? Do you have any control over the heat? i.e. can you move it from luke warm to cold?

Hm, I think its not a cable.
I can move it freely and it does change the air temp - just hot in this case is mild only. Can take off my coat, just my swimming trunks won't do Smile

If it has climate control then the heat selector is an electronic actuator.

Yes, I have an "auto" AC.

Isn't there a flap that diverts air to pass through the heater matrix?
Or how does this work?

With ice & snow I think the revving bit is not going to work out just now Smile
As for covering the rad - coolant temp is ok according to the dial....

Just experimenting.
I can get totally cold air, so the flap is working to some point.
Also, if I set the circulation to cabin, it is ~OK (windows will mist of course)

Also, just checked: both hoses are hot.
The flap motor does engage, and it makes a sound when it reaches both of its limits.
Point of "engagement" is somewhere in the middle of the cold zone.
AC + inside circulation more or less made things comfy. Switching to outside air it cooled off right away.

Does it get significantly warmer when revved/driving and gradually cooler on idle? Had a similar problem with mine, Then the heater matrix broke which I then replaced and voila constant hot air. happened to a mate of mine with an xsi as well so I think it might be quite common.

Exactly - hot whilst driving, cool on idle.
Will have the matrix changed in January.

Yes, checked and no air locks whatsoever, antifreeze at -30C.
Matrix to be changed shortly.
