my weekend got a whole lot worse after overtaking, dropping a gear, revving to 6000, then all i herd was bang bang bang at 4000 rpm....
it only does it at that rpm, sounds like its coming from the top of the engine and not noticeable on low rpm, only when you put your foot down...
apparently its something about a conrod blah blah blah said the guy at the garage....
i know nothing about engines ect
so what im asking is....swap the engine, or get it rebuilt?
thanks!

Had a chat to him on the phone and from what he has described its bottom end that has gone...

he described very similar symtoms to what another lad locally had happen to his gti6 and it was bottom end failure...

Do you get any tell tale signs that the bottom end is going?

Or will it just let go like in this case? Sad

Unlikely a spark plug as you would get a tapping all the way through the rev range.

And its not as simple as simply swapping bottom ends as you want to make sure that the bottom end your fittings tidy.

If your unsure what your looking for get an expert to check it over

can't understand why it would only do it at that rpm. and wouldn't sorting the bottom end be cheaper/easier/better than swapping the whole lump?

Does it start and tick over fine? Any tapping noises or other odd mechanical sounds?

Not really, with the cost of skimming, gaskets, stretch bolts etc. you will end up spending a lot, if however you know for a fact the complete engine you are buying is sound, then it's a much more economical way to go.
