To be honest, you could still join the Navy as a helicopter engineer at 32. Whether you'd enjoy the terrible pay drop is another question!

A career as a start out would be good for your son, I have done 12 years in the fleet air arm. A job like pugheaven's would also be good

Pay drop, really?
I thought that would be really good money

Its shocking mate, really is.

The only good money is doing your civilian aircraft licences or being a contractor like pugheaven whom I'm guessing did his apprenticeship.

Typical hourly rates for contractors is between £16 - £18 per hour

Not for me although id be happy to Do it if they would take me on at 32!
I'm just thinking of the future and a career for my son.

Hey Andy, I don't think it takes a lot of brains to get onto an apprenticeship with British Airways. Passes in the core GCSE subjects is the minimum academic requirement, but on top of that you need to be keen and willing and show mechanical aptitude; which they test for.

The first year of the apprenticeship is upaid and is a college placement at Kingston, Farnborough or Brooklands college, if you visit their websites I think they have a requirments page that will tell you everything you want to know.

Or google BA apprenticeships. The company now also has a dedicated youtube page and has videos of current apprentices sharing their experiences.

Deepak my old mate...where you working and would they have any have any gaps for an ex-RN rotary wing techie?

Hey Gilesy,

To answer your question I'm going to have to immitate an HR girl. "Please refer to the British Airways career website".

What I will say though is that they will be recruiting externally for mechs/techs and engineers soon, so definitely subscribe to the site and keep a close check on it.

Being ex-forces, fixed or rotary, will more than likely put you at the top of the list mate.

I hope I've helped guys, good luck!

Just to let people know,

In my first post I also mentioned that I would rent my garage and tools to those who wanted a space to work on their own car

£50 a day would get you:
- Lots of room in a clean and organised garage
- Access to a full toolbox, crane and engine stand
- My account with Euro Car Parts with free delivery
- My (limited) help and (endless) advice - just tell me when to shut up.

Of course not all jobs take just one day, i.e. a successful engine change, so we can come to an arrangement and you can leave your car overnight if need be.

Let me know if any of you are interested and we can arrange something.

This way you can save money and learn something in the process!

I'm not broke... I'm just enterprising! Ha! I'm just trying to put together some money for something I have planned.

Oh, and I don't drive a 306 anymore, but a BMW can burn just as big a hole in your pocket...
