I have just fixed my car after months of trying to find out why it kept losing power and stalling.

I have fixed lots of parts and the car is almost running fine now.

One issue I have though is the fuel guage.
My car is an XSi 2.0 16V Phase 2.
This means the fuel sender unit is part of the fuel pump.

I have replaced the fuel pump but the issue remains.
Every time I start my car up, the fuel guage will show me how much fuel I have, if I leave car running for awhile or drive around, the fuel guage steadily rises steadily over time.
It's moved from quarter tank (which is how much petrol I had) to half a tank before.

It is not due to being on a hill etc. before you think it is that. It happens everytime I start the car and let it run for awhile.

The problem I

When it's gone up on it's own try stopping and getting out and open the fuel filler flap and remove the cap.

Does it hiss and loads of air enters the tank?

If it does I had that problem with the S16, I eventually found out that solenoid that controls the fuel vapours from the charcoal canister in the drivers wing had failed open and the engine was sucking all the air out of the fuel tank deforming it, making the gauge read wrong.

Yes, it always hisses as air is sucked into the tank whenever I open fuel cap.

Is this an easy fix myself or a garage job?

Easy enough to do your self, somewhere by the drivers wing will be a hose that comes out of the wing that has a solenoid connected to it then a pipe that goes to the throttle body, if you remove the pipes from the solenoid temporarily and bung them up (I used a suitably sized bolt screwed into the hose) Then you can replace the solenoid whenever.

If you don't block the engine side pipe up properly you'll have running issues.

So the part I will need to replace is the solenoid and it can be found in the engine bay coming from out of the drivers wing?

What is the solenoid called and any idea who would sell one?

Would prefer to buy one and then replace it rather than blocking the pipe temporarily.

The round brown thing is what your looking for (it's different to the one fitted to my S16 and is in a slightly different place but does the same thing)
