Please help me guys as this is really getting on my nerves!!!! Crazy

The gearbox in my car is generating a really awful sound when the engine is at idle speed. It sounds like there's no oil at all in the gearbox, and the gears run dry. Obviously it's not the case, as the oil has just been filled up with Total Transmission BV 75W-80 (the original PSA oil) and it's up to the level.

I've changed the oil as there was Castrol SMX-S in it, then switched to Motul then now to original Total. I thought that the non original oil causes the noise, but it seems like I was wrong...

The gearbox is absolutely clean, as I even removed the casing fromt he 5th. gear to check whether I can see something, but it was all great - I mean totally clean, no metal particles etc...

It rattles at idle, but as soon as I engage the clutch it disappears (but the noise is deffo gearbox related).
When the engine is cold it's nearly silent, but after 1-2 mins. it starts rattling.
And when I depress the clutch several times (like pumping the brake pedal) the noise somewhat decreases. And after a bit of time - say 20-30 sec - it's increasing again.

Otherwise the box itself is great, no crunch at all, gearchanges are really smooth, can change gears without problems (even at 7000rpm), and when the car is moving or when the clutch is depressed it's abolutely silent.

Can somebody shed a light on this as it's really really annoying! (now it's louder than the engine!!!)

Forgot to mention, that it's a Xsara VTS with the 5-speed gearbox

Sad

well if you disengage by pressing the clutch and the noise goes away how can it be the box

easy, the gears in the box stop turning....

might be worn gearbox bearings from having incorrect oil.

unfortunately that's what I think too Sad

or even worn gears - so with bigger gap between the connecting gears' teeth they can generate rattle

With the input shaft bearing out, can it do such things?

it is... partly, because the whole clutch has only done around 5000km, but mainly because it's a totally different noise.... Cry

my box sounded awful and it was the clutch, i realised it was the clutch making the noise when it went totally, started slipping and then the noise had gone completely.
