< 50 RA is the general guideline in terms of MLS gaskets - this doesn't have to be ground, it can be done on a good flycutter.

I would also check the block for a crack - however it will be very small, and not necessarily visible!

Is that all?! Im a toolmaker by trade and a roughness average or 50 is awfull. With the right cutter, speeds and feeds you can easily achieve a 1.6 ra or better. Grinding will of coarse be better but why bother when milling would be so easy. Wouldnt you just scrape the block flat to save stripping it down? Thats all i did on my birds TU engine when rebuilding after a cambelt failure and that works a treat. Just takes a little time. Smile

There is no carbon on the top of that piston, I read somewhere thart that is a good sign of a water leak into that cylinder. Having suffered with overheating issues in the past this is looking very much like you have a crack in the bore somewhere. Can you get the block out, strip it and then have it pressure thested?

The block is already out of the car dave Smile

Ive replaced the engine as i couldnt be arsed figuring out what was up with the block

Not sure what to do with it now, probs just strip it down at some point and get it tested, then maybe sell it.

It turns out Chris' pistons melted becuase he was using regular unleaded - 95 octane.

This isn't nearly as stable, and doesn't burn as controlably as super unleaded like V-Power or Tesco 99 octane.

The result is detonation, and melted pistons as can be seen by the pics. So, all low-boost S/C users, please fill up with a high octane fuel like V-Power or Tesco 99 octane, as recommended in the installation guide.

The problem is high compression engines like the XU10J4RS, particularly when boosted, will be prone to det if poor quality fuel is used, or they run lean, too hot etc.

If you want to use regular unleaded [95 octane] I can supply some modified ECU software with less ignition advance [and slightly less power!].

Cheers
Rich

You can see where the flame front has got to before the rest has simply detonated under the pressure No

Rich, i totaly acept the blame for this, as both counts was my fault, shit oil then wrong fuel, the kit is an excellant kit and i was very happy with it, so i recomend it to anyone, as long as they use good oil and the correct fuel.

Chris, not trying to blame anyone mate! These things happen, I mean look at how many engines I have killed getting to where I am now. I raised the point purely because I dont want other people to have the same issues :-)
