Lean running/running too hot/air leak.

Hmmm, thats a number of things.

It wasnt hot i dont think, engine was running fine before it went bang!

Running lean, sticky injector maybe ?

Air leak, from where ? surely more air would help, or you mean into the cylinder from somewhere

Did you test compression before you ran it after the HG replacement?

I'd get the head pressure tested to make sure the valves are sealing ok and then look at the injectors.

Nope, didnt think i had to, it started as it used to, so thought it would be ok.

The head will be getting sold on now, as i have no need for it, what with having a new engine now Smile

I'll get the injectors looked at aswell, dont want another melted piston LOL

Nah, they're next to a hose/seals place we use, never used them though.

More air=leaner mixture=hotter temp. Remember bunsen burners at school, more air, hotter flame... Sure its melted and not detonated?

Have many sc people had melted pistons?

Crossflow aka Rob on here has an ASNU machine, sure if you ask him nicely he'll do them for not too much dosh...

Dan,

Pretty much as others have said:

- Breached HG - this causes the surrounding water-jacket to fill with air, the cylinder loses it's cooling, hot spots develop and cause det

- Cracked block - as above

- Lean running due to blocked injector or fuel starvation - causes det.

- If this is the engine that had the HG repaired, skimming heads often leaves sharp edges around the combustion chamber in the head - these form hot spots and also cause det.

- The software used on the S/C conversion is quite conservative and rich, to aid piston cooling and help prevent det. So fueling is unlikely to be the issue.

- A blocked oil spray bar would cause the piston to over-heat.

- When the HG went before, if it severely over-heated the bore could be out of round causing improper ring sealing. This means you get oil contamination on the bores, which also induces det.

What cylinder was it on?

Smile

It was on the one where the headgasket blew, so related to that it seems.

Melted = the piston has curled over and sunk down on the edge, like a candle if you like.

with the piston melting in the same cylinder as where the headgasket blew, points to one thing which is when headgasket blow just skimming the head is not enough you need to deck the block also due to it been warped aswell.

It's very common for people these days not to skim the block aswell due to the work involved.

These new age steel headgaskets need a perfect finish for them to seal right.
You need head and blocks to be ground to get the steel headgasket to seal correctly.

^^What he said, really you need a minimum of 50 microinch finish on both the block and the head, I took mine to 12.5 when I did mine.

We need to use grinder as we rebuild F1 engines which don't use headgaskets at all

Not really any advantage either way for an MLS gasket though.

< 50 RA is the general guideline in terms of MLS gaskets - this doesn't have to be ground, it can be done on a good flycutter.

I would also check the block for a crack - however it will be very small, and not necessarily visible!

^Magnaflux do a decent dye inspection kit for picking up cracks - although obviously only if they've reached the surface.

I think I've still got some of the dye somewhere if you want to borrow it Dan?
Have to see if I can find the UV lamp though Unsure

Aye, Magnaflux is good, unless you have an x-ray machine, which is even better Laugh
