My mate has recently purchased a 1997 phase 1 gti6. Today he noticed that it was letting him rev way past where the limiter should let you, as it continued to rev up to about 7750, where he chickened out and eased off.

He also put some red x in it when he got it and wondered if that could by any chance be causing this?

Any suggestions much appreciated,

Cheers Thumbs up

Every gear?

I think p1 let you rev slightly higher, I also noticed my rallye revs to around 74xx in some gears.

Sounds like it might have had the rev limiter raised?

You know any other history of the car?

That would be my guess Yes

I am slightly worried that there are people out there that rev to the limit, but don't even glance at the guage to see what revs they are doing Unsure

I thought it was the other way round, and that the earlier models had a lower limit than the later?

I don't get these people who drive there car to the limiter? Even when booting it, theres absolutley NO point?! Like mei says, your way past peak power so your just putting undue strain on the engine...

I don't think I've ever changed above 7000 and the only time i've got near the limiter is in 5th

Sometimes in lower gears it can be useful. When you're driving trough a 60mph corner, you can keep it at 2nd gear. When changing gears at 7000+ rpm your next gear has higher revs and more power than changing below 7000rpm. This is useful when changing from 2nd to 3rd and from 3rd to 4th. At higher gears, the time you loose at 7000+ rpm is more than winning at 5500rpm in the next gear. So at lower gears it can be useful, at higher gears the loss bigger than the win.
It's also possible to alter the ecu in a way that the peak power is above 7000rpm. I find this useful during sprints and a lot of high rpm corners.

Superchips software for these sometimes have silly high RPM limits - so it could have had a serial re-program

What about of your giving it some and need to change up a gear, if you are at peak power point when you do wouldnt you drop out of it with the change of gear and lose momentum? If however you are towards max revs when changing you would be nearer the power band of the higher gear? Unsure

Whoever says that changing after peak power is worthless is talking total rubbish; especially on these engines. They rev well at high RPM, and you don't want to bog down too much between shifts.

so whaty exactly is the point of changing gear at 7400, when all you'll do is drop down to 6500, where what happens?

oh yeah PEAK power and where it dies off Laugh my ass off

Surely if you change at 7400 in first or second it will drop you back down to less than 6500 though wouldnt it?
I cant remember the gearing on my 6 too well as its been a while so I might be talking bo***cks but I always felt the need to get the most out of second to keep momentum and good power in third.
Saying that, When I had my old 6 on the RR peak power was 6850 iirc so maybe its just down to different engines/modifications etc.
