Not on my car, but on my mrs' Puma 1.7 16v.

Changing her spark plugs today to find the plug from cylinder 1 covered in oil. The car drives too well for the piston to be damaged, so it's either going to be the piston rings, or oil's possibly coming in through the top via the valve guides.

How much would this cost to be sorted at a garage? It's down on power but still drives fine and she doesn't take it over 4000rpm, so it's not posing any immediate problem. I'm thinking if it'll cost >

Do you get a noticeable puff of blue smoke on start-up? It will most likely be valve stem seals if you do and piston rings if you don't.

Any smoke if you leave it idling for ages?

None at all. And it doesn't eat oil either.

Maybe the cam cover gasket? Suppose it's worth a punt before ripping the engine out. Laugh

Doubt it, you may be lucky and it could be a ring sticking due to carbon deposits, in which case the old italian tune up - full throttle, no throttle, ad infintum, may sort it.
Failing that if I can find a wee bottle somewhere I'll sent you some nitro-meth to try, that normal free's up anything that's thinking about sticking.

Nice one Phil, thanks.

I suppose an engine flush wouldn't quite have the same effect? Whistle

The engine sounds good; certainly no worrying noises.

I am assuming that this means guides gone? My mate's S12 does this, and we put it down to being the turbo (also puffs smoke on the overrun.)

Usually.
