As some of you know im preparing to strip my rear beam soon. Adjusting ride height up a bit and replacing bearings (thanks Miles).

Im aware that the surface of the arm shafts where the bearings run is crucial for the longevity of the new bearings but ive heard that some peoples beams have to be scrapped altogether.

Can anyone help and explain what im looking out for to distinguish whether my beam is worthy to remain on the car or not.

Am I looking for loads of rust inside the beam or a poor surface under where the new bearings will be seated - I hope you get the gist.

Any advice is very much appreciated,

ChrisSmile

i thought it was just the pins where the bearings run that needed changing!!
im interested also as my beam is shagged also, looks like theres only half the tyre touching the ground

I think it naturally has a bit of camber!

Ive given mine a good shake, 9 to 3 and 12 to 6 etc but cant find any play in mine. It does have a bit of a creak when I get out sometimes ( not that im a fat boy) so thats a bit worrying.

But as for damage to the beam, whats the deal?

what you need to look for is the pins wearing through the casing of the bearing in the crossmember tube, also any wear that has gone through the hardened layer on the trailing arm shaft means the shaft should be replaced, usually shows up as indentations that you can barely feel with a fingernail but will soon eat up a set of new needle bearings.

creaking could be anything really, more often than not its the suspension lifting and the rear wheel moving a little, pads on the disc making the creaking noise.

best bet is to pull it all apart sooner rather than later t investigate.

When the bearings have failed. Your shafts will be scrap, along with your beam tube, becasue the shafts use the beam tube as a bearing, hence you get negative camber and an ovaled tube.

If your beam tube is scrap, i may have a useable tube available.

Cheers I will bear you in mind then if it does need to be replaced.

Overall I dont think its that bad - even though its on 133k! As said, there doesnt seem to be any play in either of them or any adverse handling characteristics - tyres are wearing evenly etc.

I figure if im splitting it to adjust the ride height I might as well wack some new bearings in thier to and do an inspection.

Thanks for the feedback guys - keep it coming!Wink

It's definately worth refreshing the beam with new bearings if you're looking at splitting it anyway.

After 133,000 miles you can safely say the originals will be a little fatigued to say the least.

If there's no physical play between the beam and swing arms when raised then it's most likely that the beam tube will be fine.

mileage has no bearing (lol) on the wear of these units.

there may not be any play at all in there and it could still be knackered.

Why do the bearings get knackered by being sat in the same position for ages - say if you parked up the car for a year or something?Unsure

With beam failure though we are talking bearings completely mashed up, ignored by the owner for months and still driven around right?
