bit of a dummy question but can i take off my calipers to paint and put them back on without having to bleed the brakes?
apparently bleeding gti's is a pain in the ass because of the abs

Short answer, no.

You can remove the carrier, independently of the caliper and do that properly, but you could do a fairly good job on the car with some patience.
