After a bit of advice if possible please, My gti-6 is burning approximately half a litre of oil every couple of weeks and we're suspecting that it's worn rings as have recently had a top end rebuild where all the valve stem oil seals were replaced along with 12 valves etc.

Is there anything else that would be worth checking before biting the bullet and doing the piston rings?!

Cheers

Think you have hit the nail on the head so to speak, could it be possible the stem seals were not fitted correctly and they have popped off?

Other than that you are going to have to strip it to find out.

Carl

Cheers for the reply Carl, I guess it's possible that the stem seals were fitted incorrectly although the chap who did the head rebuild has got a very good reputation.

If it were to be therings are they a complete pain/expensive to do?!

Do a compression test on it cold, then hot and record the readings

Then do it hot with a small amount of oil down the cylinder, pour it down the spark plug hole, if your compression raises it's definately worn rings or bores

DON'T PUT LOTS OF LIQUID INTO THE BORE AS YOU MAY GET A HYDRAULIC LOCK
