One day i decided that i would like to have drilled discs on my gti6 but could not warrent spending the kind of money that these go for. i know that you do get a better quality product made from better materials if you buy proper performance discs but i rarely go fast enough to need these. So purely for aesthetic reasons i thought that i could drill some standard ones!

Firstly i practiced on the shot discs that i took of the car just to make sure i could accomplish what it was that i wanted. I tried to drill all the way through but the vanes between the vented discs were pushing the drill bit off course. I then decided that as it was only to look nice through the wheel i could just dimple them with the drill to get the same efect.



This is what i settled for;














They do make a very slight 'brushing' sound which you can here with the windows down but you do not here them inside the car with the windows up. I do not get any wobble/out of balance feeling at all even from high speed braking.

I like the look of them and i am happy with the results.

I understand that people may be concerned about safety with respect to these so i accept no responsibility for any mishaps if other people try this.

It took a while to come up with a method for measuring the correct spacing for them, but once this was established i could measure, centre punch and drill one disc in about an hour. It's important that you get the dimples to show through the wheels and not get obscured by the spokes. Using a wheel bolt hole in the disc as a reference point, you can calculate this.

much easier/faster method; lend discs to a firing range and place them behind the targets Ninja

Very valid point!! if you cant afford the real thing then dont bother, it aint about looking good with such vital components its the effect they produce. You have way to much time on your hands, best use it now to fit a set of new discs before you do ome harm to yourself or some innocent roaduser!!!

I wouldn't go for drilled discs regardless of them being homemade or off the shelf for all but the highest quality. I honestly and very seriously advise you not to try them on the road No

you realise that discs drilled from the factory are prone to cracking around the holes, right? That's disks drilled from the factory that have to meet certain standards, machined very accurately and using a constant stream of coolant to minimise heat stressing the material.

I'd keep a mate on standby logged into your account here ready to delete this thread the moment they explode sending you into a school bus...

Although I disagree with your principle of asthetics over performance and I feel your method is somewhat unusuall I don't see a problem with Drilling disks.
I know someone who has been doing a similar thing for some years now. He however drills between the vanes.

Exactly, Porsche's are a good example, OE drilled discs have a habit of cracking between the holes...
