I currently have no stone chips. Not a single one (car is only on 1,200 miles though), and call me an anal twat (I'm sure some will Razz) but I'd like to keep it this way.

Some cars seem to be littered with them, others don't. It seems to me to be mostly down to the driver (although I'm sure decent paint helps).

Any thoughts as to what to avoid? I know it seems simple, don't tailgate etc., but in what situation is this most likely to happen? Following trucks? Off-roaders? I know some of you are into keeping their cars "mint", so any ideas appreciated!

With the shitbox state of our roads it'll be impossible to avouid them, the only solution I know of is Armourfend , it's a very thin and tough coating tailor made for the front of the car. It was originally developed to protect airliner paint finishes at high altitude and is also the reason you don't see the competing cars at Le Mans with worn decals at the end of 24 hours it's good stuff.

Yeah, I can see waxing and what not will help. Can't say I would want to pay to put something on the car. What sort of price range are these applications of film anyway?

bain of my life too,
1. always leave at least 4 car lengths between you and car in front.
2. never let anyone overtake at all costs, (all the c**p sits in the middle of the road and gets flicked up as car passes)im not saying drive faster either, just don't let em overtake.
3. drive with lights on, even in the day time (ive been experimenting with this recently and for some reason - but not quite 100% of the time - cars coming the opposite way tend to keep further to their left and avoiding the same scenario as mentioned in point # 2 above)
4. avoid certain roads that have big chevrons in the middle for junctions, you always get some c**t flying across them cutting junctions (again see points 2-3.
5. don't drive in really hot weather as the extra sticky tyres due to the heat further cause stones to flick up more readily.
6. if you ever see a gritter just avoid it at all costs, or if its coming the opposite way, spin round quick and stay in front.
7. avoid any roadwork's
8. always keep to your far left (though being mindful of and debris near to the curb ) to increase the distance between yourself and the traffic coming in the opposite direction as these can and do still flick up stones.

there are a few others but I can safely say my bonnet is in top condition as a result Cool

If you dont want to alter your driving style like the above just have it painted when it gets bad.

Had the bonnet painted on my rallye 1500 miles ago, already has two smallish chips, but then i do drive at warp speed.

I think what ever you do its going to happen one way or the other, it's like women as they age there looks fade and so does the sex!

I have loads of stone chips on the front of the bonnet which I have touched up. I see them all the time because I know they are there but they dont show up in pictures really.

I will be looking at getting the front end resprayed at some point but no matter what you use, its only a matter of time before the paint is chipped again.

When I had the bumpers done a few years back, took a drive to diss 2 days later and got three big chips in the bumper on the way there Roll eyes

I would say, find a good scientiet and get him to invent a magnetic force field around your car LOL

Haha, some interesting thoughts.

What can I say, it's not even my car, although I will have it for a number of years.

There are indeed more things to worry about, but as it's new, thought I'd try something. Never actually thought I was bad for this (getting chips on previous cars), as I don't tailgate as a general rule.

I can just imagine you Captain handbraking it when you spot a gritter in the middle of winter LOL
