Here we go again... yet another supercharged 6 you say. You know the score... one lynx kit off mr walker, bits of aluminium, some silicone hose, a ROTREX C30-94Ninja and a couple of days of bruised knuckles and back pain!

I bought the kit well over a year ago.. minus the manifold as i was in talks with an engineer to make me one utilising the existing head flange. BIG mistake.. A few prototypes later it didnt really look too good for a good flowNo And doing it without the kit on an engine or supercharger in hand, it was never gonna be 100%. So i gave up and gave rich a call.. who was quite resourceful in supplying me with oneCheers

My ASTOR is quite an old timer now.. have had it more than 5 yearsHuh?. It has never ceased to amaze me. Owning quite a few other JAP and GERMAN cars, i could always revert to the 6 for some countryside tarmac rapingNinja. I kept it quite immaculate for the first few years, with as little miles on it as possible.. 15K when i got it. Then i gave up and started modifying it for fast road. The more i used it, the more i got used to the power. So i planned for a BOOST implant aftr the peak 187 it produced in NASP modeSmile


This project itself was intended to be completed last AUGUST.. but a new MRS and some financial decisions made me think otherwise..

Anyway.. As i've sold the garage, this conversion had to be done on the driveway.. which was more like a porchLOL

First off was scrapping the aircon rad and all pipes to make way for the slim SPAL fans.. These were mounted using the mounting kit which involves sort of tie wrapping the fans on the radiator... A bit of rewiring and mounting of the relay box..





Next power steering ram was removed to make way for the front mounted intercooler.. like others it has downward facing in/outlets. So i had a custom pipe made with machined hosetails to couple the hot pipe coming out the rack.




Mounting the fmic was straight forward. Lining it dead centre and keeping it as far forward as possible so the rad gets as much air tooSmile. Will be using 90 degree silicone bends for now until i can drive the car to the welders.




Mounted the charger oil resevoir to the nearside flitch with some self tappers as its quite tricky getting nuts and bolts in the area without removing the rad.



As you know the charger needs to use an oil cooler as the temperature the fluid gets to is near boiling point. Mounting it next to the fmic seemed ideal, but needed a bit of bumper trimmageYes.







Time to get some cuts and bruises... Removed the manifold and fuel rail. Then removing the engine cradle was an arse of a job. Supporting the engine from underneath i undid the top mount and removed the powersteering pump. Then removed the alternator.. which itself puzzled me with 16mm boltsCrazy as it was too tight of a space to get to with a ratchet. The aircon compressor came out easily enough.. then the actual cradle was a b*tch as most of the bolts were seized. So out came the airgun.Whistle




Then on went the modified cradle with the SC bracket.. which after a few attempts made me realise the alternator had to go on before the charger bracketDry. Which meant the cradle went on, then mount on. Then out came the spanner to fit the bracket in such a tight space. Could really have done with those halfords ratchet spannersRoll eyes



Once the bracket was in place the shiny RED manifold went on with a PTFE manifold gasketNinja. Some bolts were quite hard to get to due to the shorter design, but i also used the original two loaceting studs for a sure fitYes. Trimmed the brake servo pipe and fitted to the push fit on the ne manifold. Then mounted the 440cc injectors to the fuel rail. I chose LUCAS ones over the BOSCH green ones. As i've heard of better spray patterns with the tri holed jets.. RICH reassured me it will work fine with the low boost map Yes




Then it was time to fit the PAS relocating brackets, which were a bit tricky and quite fiddly. But after a few international calls to RICH we sorted it.




Connected up the low pressure pipe and went about cutting the high pressure pipe... utilising a 90degree bend from existing pipe to new pipe supplied!




Next i temp fitted the charger to locate a good angle for the throttle body housing.. Again being a later type ROTREX, it meant it had to welded on to the inlet of the charger.. This also gave me a chance to get the outlet of the charger sorted in 63mm for the boost pipe and a nice 45 degree angled pipe mitred and welded tooBig grin




Then it was time to swap the eeprom over.. thanks to rich_w for soldering the socket onThumbs up




Whilst the bits were at welders i set about some rewiring.. as the kit requires to lengthen the TPS, MAP, IACV, IAT wires.

Got the charger and boost pipes back from welders with an extortionate billUnsure




Routed and mounted all charger fluid pipes and set about getting the boost pipe fitted... Inlet to manifold was easy enough.. utilising a 90 degree and 45 degree bendYes




Problem was getting a 63mm pipe to squeeze through the gap in between the oil filter and alternator.. So i've ordered some reincforced silicone pipe to couple with the 90 degree bend from under the FMIC. So until thats delivered... she cant be fired upSad





Have fitted a boost and air/fuel ratio gauge in the passenger airbag after removing the TNT.LOL Just to keep on eye on things.. as its imperitive there is no boost leak in this setupSmug

Great to see another one on the road.

How much did the welding cost? Get fisted? It doesn't even look particularly neat, but it's much better than using silicone connectors Yes

It's worth trying to find a good welder, I know a couple of very very neat people, but they are hard to find. Particularly at a good price.

Right.. Got the new piping and got crackingSmile




Finally....


Key in ignition... Twist to prime... Checked the fuel lines and injectors... One further twist of the key and it fired up first time..Cheers

The beast was resurrected at 4.01 pm on the 6th of marchSmug

Did some fluid checks and watched the idle sit snug at 900rpm. Didnt really sound any different till i blipped the go pedal.. Then all hell broke loose. But i managed to resist until it was up to temperature. Quite important that it does especially being a boosted high comp engine.

The new reinforced pipe worked a treat, as there were no signs of vacuum collapse. Shame that couldnt be said for the 90degree elbows off the intercooler.

Test drive... Aaarghh no powersteering.. so back again to check the pipes. No signs of leaks and belt didnt seem to be slack. Although the hi-pressure pipe seemed to twist easily! I jacked it up, took the cap off the power steering resevoir, and gave it a few left to rights to get the air out of the system. Back on the road it was a little better, so must be some trapped air. So into first eased throttle felt like any 6, bit harder and the boost gauge is reading some positivity. Bang full throttle.. tyres light up and reading a peak 7psi... SWEET:B

Did a few easy runs in 3rd and 4th just to make sure the boost was holding. These mikalor clamps are a worthy investmentYes

Back to the resting place for a final check and further tightening of clamps. Although i havent got a mikalor for the 76mm side on manifold. Some more fluid checks and tyre inflation then i was off for a proper road test.

By this time the powersteering had come to life and i head for a nice dual carriageway. Pulled hard through third and fourth a few times. Now boost showing 9psi 5krpm on wards..Ninja. It did hiccup once though at 6k in second where the boost pipe came off manifold because of a dodgy clamp. Sorted nowThumbs up

Still buzzing a little bit and so relieved it works. Still a bit more testing to doYes, a quick service and a wash. But im quite happy. As this project has cost me somewhat more than the fellow charged 6's. Will update with some videos later...:-)

Good stuff mate.

I get boost leaks all the time, as the angle of my pipework causes the silicon to be in constant contact with the PAS pump...engine gets hot > PAS pump gets hot > silicon gets hot > hole. Sad

Have to change it about every month. Laugh Dry

Need to install a boost gauge badly.

Lol.. This routing seems perfect with the reinforced stuff. Was that 259bhp on the first map wayne did?

How healthy was the afr on rollers? As the top end seems too rich.. i believe we all have a copy of your original map?

TBH I'm pretty sure that I never received an AFR graph, as I didn't attend the mapping session due to being at work, you'd have to speak to Rich about that I guess.

Do you have a wideband lambda Mabz?

If not your AFR readings will be meaningless.

N/B lambdas are only accuracte around lambda = 1 [14.7 AFR].

You need a W/B lambda if you want to know your AFR at conditions other than idle and part throttle.

That's why the ECU doesn't listen to the lambda at wide open throttle...

Some fresh Vpower has replaced the 5 month old shite that was in there.. few miles on its performing SWEET:B

Did notice the belt is no longer on rib number one on charger.. its jumped to number 2. I presume this is now the belts home position? i've noticed quite a bit of dust and a weird squeek on part throttle. and the slightest noise from one of the rollers.. the belt seems tight enough and the manual tensioner is furthest away...

Have treated the beast to a fresh engine and gearbox oil change. Quite as ever and smooth changes. The total 75w80 is miles better than the silkolene pro synctran... Althought the silkolene pro 5w40 is the best i've used in the engine by far.

I will have to invest in a wideband.. let me know if lynx can get me a good price on a aem one.. as the innovate ones are problematic i hearWhistle

P.S the 2.5" to scorpion box sounds ballistic at 7KrpmNinja

mines peaks about 8 psi but dont know how accurate the gauge is,
TBH after a while you dont really look at the boost gauge but is useful to make sure your still getting the same boost,
They are cool though to see, especially when your changing gear as the boost drops down to -20 then straight back up to 8psi, although when running that much boost your eyes should be on the road and not on the gauge LOL

nice one... think my increase in boost is because of the 2.5" piping... believe yours and zacs are 2"..

gonna measure boost before fmic to see if i drop any..

when you blow a pipe all you have to do is look at the boost gauge... i was shitting it when i did.. as in this setup it aint a good idea when theres no TB after the charger!

Seems like i have an issue... hesitation on boost..

boost holds fine, so no leaks... but power surges about 5.5K then jumps back into life sometimes. Mainly in 1st and 2nd gear.. but i come off the throttle and plant it again it'll pull hard.

Gauges where from Demon Tweeks, not cheap though think they saw me coming,
