Hi guys,

I was in Greenwich on Saturday and the traffic was horrific and I was stopping and starting in traffic for about 3 hours. At points I switched the engine off as I was standing still for 10 minutes at a time. Eventually the car would not start when I turned the ignition on and the car wasn't even turning over and the plipper would not even lock the car and alarm it up. The only way I could get the car started was to get someone to connect a charger to the battery, which allowed me to then start the car. After that, the car ran fine. The next day though I had the same problem from cold and it wouldn't start.

Do I need a new battery?

Is the alternator gone do you think?

Any help / ideas would be much appreciated.

Thanks again,

Karl Smile

Is the alternator light on?

Also, chack the battery Voltage when running and when standing. It should be iver 14.5V when running and over 12.3V when standing.

Could be the battery terminals - had this on both the rallye and one of the dt's - because the battery was free to move it'd wiggle the terminals off.

Does the Ignition (battery symbol) illuminate when you bring the ignition switch on to position 2 before you start?

It's best to measure battery voltage under load; so get someone to crank the engine while you measure. A good battery shouldn't dip much below 9V when cranking.

Multiple starts while you've been idling for hours is just draining your battery. To get any kind of charge back into the battery the engine needs some revs, as idling is just trickle charging the battery.

It might be possible to trickle charge <2Amps the battery back into life using a mains charger, but your success depends on how long it has sat in a discharged state.

If in doubt replace.

It was worth the bump just for the view. Wink

I would ask the OP if a new battery solved it but he's unlikely to answer as he's not a paid up member. Doh
